Why You Should Realize that Even the Worse Situations Have Opportunity

Have you ever been in a situation where you just thought you were in an awful position and from your viewpoint, there was literally nothing good about your predicament?  I have had this experience in many instances throughout my life…dating all the way back to childhood when one of my friends convinced all my other friends I had been a snitch and totally tarnished my reputation (talk about thinking the world had ended…I was convinced I would never have friends again…isn’t high school great?).  Even later in life at work when one of our top clients went bankrupt and left the company I work for holding a lot of liability and receivables.

Although I had assumed what I was going through was the absolute worse thing in the world, the reality was both of those situations actually had opportunities disguised within.  The problem was though at the time I was going through them, I didn’t exactly have that realization.  As a result I did precisely what you should not do.  I panicked, I freaked myself out, and I made grave attempts to convince myself that there was no way out.  Essentially, I made the experiences painful.

It never occurred to me that my best line of attack was to have confidence that there is always an opportunity in disguise and there is always something much bigger going on.  Looking back at each of those instances I now realize how the opportunities disguised within each one of them positively contributed to my future and how they both were so important in my life.

Having this confidence in the alternaview, that problems always have opportunities disguised within, has allowed me to view challenges and issues that arise from a better perspective.  Always understanding there is more going on than what meets the eye and that the best thing I can do is use that reality to provide me the assurance I need to navigate calmly through challenges.  The issue is not that challenges arise, but rather that sometimes we don’t handle them in the best manner and with the best frame of mind.  If we genuinely believe in the alternaview that all problems have disguised opportunities, we will be more at peace as life unfolds (because either way life is going to happen, and we should enjoy the ride)…that is the alternaview.
