Too Much to do…Too Little Time

Have you ever had one of those days where you wake up in the morning and just feel overwhelmed because you have an ever growing list of things you need to do? You have way too many thoughts running through your mind and you are beginning to feel a little (or perhaps a lot) stretched.

The alternaview:
Now it may feel that overwhelming days like this could potentially take their toll on us and not turn out to be great days.  However, the alternaview is that these days actually can and should be great days we approach as opportunities to seize the day and recharge our motivation and determination.

If we are able to have the right perspective on these days and understand we are in control of not only what we are able to do, but also how we feel about the day, we will be in a much better place.  With the right perspective, we will also position ourselves to accomplish a lot for the day and as a result gain some positive momentum and energy because we will feel good about all we have done.

When we genuinely want to integrate this alternaview into our life:

1.  Decide that the day will be productive:
•    At the beginning of the day when you feel the thoughts and or feelings of being overwhelmed starting to stir up, decide right then and there that today will be a great and productive day.
•    Tell yourself that the day will be productive, and as you effectively accomplish tasks, remind yourself of your productivity.  Feel good about what you have done.

2.  Create an action list for the day:
•    Start the day off right by creating a plan.  There are things that you absolutely need to do today, but there are also things that can wait until tomorrow.  Be realistic about your list and make certain you can reasonably complete everything that you include.
•    Work off this action list throughout the day and cross off items as you complete them.  It feels great and contributes to your positive energy when you are able to cross things off your list and see you are getting somewhere.

3.  Focus 100% of your attention on what you are doing
•    Place your attention on the task you are completing and don’t let your mind wander on other things, such as all that you have to do or what you need to do next.
•    Focus on being extremely effective and efficiently completing the task at hand.

If we don’t take control of the day, it is easy to start the downward spiral that will only continue to get progressively worse. There are ways to not only get a handle on days like this, but also to create strategies we can integrate into our daily routine that will ultimately lead to a productive day where we just feel great despite all we need to do…this is the alternaview.

Oftentimes, our mind overwhelms us; and we’re now aware of it. We do have a choice though. It is just a matter of deciding what you want to do and be totally firm with it. Of course, this kind of attitude must be developed; it’s up to us. :-)

This one was right on time. I had a busy morning and am sitting here looking at the clock thinking about what I think I can actually get done this afternoon. If I can just pull together a short list I might actually have the hope of getting out of today feeling productive. Good tip.

Walter: Welcome to the alternaview. Thanks for the comment. I am in complete agreement. We can definitely let our minds convince us we are overwhelmed and invent more and more reasons that attempt to justify our feelings of being overwhelmed. As you mentioned, the choice is ours as to how we will manage our thoughts and our mind. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts.
