Is it really too good to last?

Many people buy into the notion that some things are just too good to last.  When things have been going well for years, when business has been flourishing and times have been phenomenal, when your personal life has been filled with ups and very few downs, many people will convince themselves it is inevitable that something out of sync will happen and that things can not continue to get better because they have been going so well for so long.  People will justify this belief with the rationale that everything is cyclical and that the time has come for the end of the cycle.

The alternaview:

The alternaview is that there is no limit to achieving greatness.  There doesn’t have to be an end to a great cycle and there is an infinite supply of goodness…it is just a matter of continually tapping into it.  Now this doesn’t mean that challenges will not arise from time to time, but when they do, we must be conscious of our perspective and how we are viewing them.  Often times, challenges are disguised opportunities and once we genuinely realize this, our ability to take advantage of the continual things life has to offer increases.

When we genuinely want to integrate this alternaview into life:

1.  Get your mind right. Doesn’t just about everything that we desire require we control our thoughts and perceptions? In order to tap into that inexhaustible supply that is offered, we have to genuinely believe it exists and it is possible for us to tap into it.  This means we literally have to clear our minds of any doubts or misconceptions that we either can’t continually achieve things or that we are not entitled or worthy to do so.  We have to reprogram ourselves by consistently reminding ourselves that not only is it possible for us to create what we desire in our lives, it is something we can continue and continue to do for as long as we want.  I believe it was Thomas Troward who described it as weeding a garden and planting new seeds, you literally have to remove all misperceptions and replace them with the truth.

2.  Continually make good decisions. You must make as many good decisions as possible to keep the good flowing.  This applies to all aspects of your life.  It means you have to be conscientious of how you are treating other people, you have to make good decisions in your family life and at work.  You have to continually try and continually do the right thing.  What is the right thing?  You always know and you can always feel what is right.  You just have to be honest with yourself and not rationalize or justify bad decisions.

3.  Be Generous. You have to follow the golden rule, and not just in terms of making charitable donations.  You have to consistently focus on giving benefits to others, whether it is a financial donation, good advice, assistance, support, friendliness, or compassion, you need to turn your focus to how you are helping others.  All of this of course needs to be done with sincerity and a genuine desire to focus on others and help them out.

4.  Do the right actions. You have to always choose to do and complete those actions that will continually contribute to your success.  You must continue to go above and beyond the call of duty and to give all you can to what you are doing.  This doesn’t just mean you work around the clock at the expense of doing other important things in life and spending time with your family and friends.  Doing the right thing requires we live a balanced life and that we do spend quality time doing things in addition to work and focusing our attention on other aspects in life that are important.

5. Appreciate the things in your life. Appreciate all you have in your life.  Appreciate your family and friends, your ability to be happy, and anything and everything else in your life that you should be grateful for.  Take notice and appreciate nature and everything else that is around you.  Take in all the good emotions and feelings that exist when you acknowledge and appreciate the great aspects of life.

6.  Focus on the truth. Know and understand that the best thing about life is not what you have, but rather who you are.  Do not become attached to those material things you have in your life.  Yes, it is great to have things you can enjoy in your life and you will continue to have more of them, but they are really only a byproduct and correlating benefit.  Ultimately what matters is the type of person you are and the type of person you are developing into.  Make certain you are continually focusing and committed to improving those aspects of yourself you know you need to work on.

7.  Protect your mental space. Do not let anything that is not beneficial hold your attention.  You have to let go of all negative thoughts and any resulting negative emotions so your mind will only be filled with those things that will help you continue to tap into the supply of goodness.  Don’t let your mind get distracted by focusing on the wrong things.

We really do have the ability to accomplish what we want and have a life filled with success and happiness.  The reality is that all we have to do is choose to believe it is possible and then choose to conform our behaviors, decisions, actions and feelings accordingly…this is the alternaview.
