So, you just can’t take it anymore. You want to leave your job and get out of it as soon as possible. You start updating your resume and searching to see what other opportunities are out there. You may even try and take care of some of the details and things you need to do to find a new job while you are still working at your current job. Or, your situation may be a little different. You may not have reached this point, but perhaps you have fallen into the complacent trap at work. You don’t feel that your job is ever going to give you what you need, but you haven’t done everything that you needed to do to improve your situation. You have however devoted a lot of time and effort to identifying everything that is wrong with your job and you complain about your job from time to time. You have fallen into the routine of waking up, going to work and counting down the minutes until you can go home. In both of these scenarios, a mental check out from your current job has occurred and you are just not as committed as you once were. A lot of attention is now focused on complaining about your current job and/or pursuing a new job or goal…both of which come at the expense of doing everything you should and going above and beyond the call of duty at your current job.
The alternaview:
The alternaview is that if you really want to get a new job or if you want things to fall into place so you can pursue your goals, you have to give all you have to your current job. Instead of complaining about your job and not doing everything that you should be doing at work, you have to find a way to maintain a high commitment at your current job, even though you don’t think the job is a good one for you. Yes, you need to to take control of the situation and create a good exit plan, but you have to take care of your existing responsibilities and do everything you can to keep your focus and commitment where it should be while you are at work. It is easy to sit around and complain to anyone and everyone that will listen, but what is complaining really doing for you? You need to do things that are going to move you in the right direction. You have to be committed to creating the right conditions so that you can position yourself for the opportunity that you want. You have to help create the right environment so that opportunities come your way…think about it as helping out with the alignment of your stars.
When you genuinely want to integrate this alternaview into your life:
So, if you have honestly determined that it is time to move on then…
Stop Complaining about your job. You have already decided you are moving on so don’t waste your time any longer complaining about all the things that are wrong with your current job. You need to devote all your energy to continuing to do a good job at your current company and the time when you are not at work should be spent on working toward your ultimate goal of securing another opportunity.
Where do you want to be? Okay, so what are you going to do? Where do you ultimately want to end up? You need to determine ideally how you want things to play out. What are your short term goals? What are your long term dreams? You need to spend some quality time with these questions and answer them. Don’t let yourself be held back by what you have decided you can realistically accomplish, just list your ultimate goals and desires because limiting yourself will get in the way.
Develop an action plan. You have to create a plan with specific action items so that you can start working toward your goal. Understand that this list will expand and change over time. That is okay. The most important thing is that you have thought out what you think you need to do. Things will become clearer as time continues and you accomplish more and more things on your list. However you need to determine some good first steps. Do you need to learn about a new skill set? Do you need to meet different types of people? Do you need more education? Figure out good things that you can start doing immediately.
DO SOMETHING. This is purposefully in caps because it is where many developing dreams get stuck. You have to be motivated to continually work toward your goal. You have to find those things that motivate you to want to go that extra mile when you would rather relax or watch tv. You have to make certain you are taking steps in the right direction and doing the things you should.
Still work hard at your current job. You must continue to commit yourself to your current job and doing all you can to do that job well. If you are doing things off of your personal action list, they should happen outside of the time that you should be working. In other words, don’t do things at work off your plan just because someone is not looking over your shoulder. You have to create the right environment and help things align so that an opportunity will be presented to you and it is important to be doing what you are supposed to be doing at work. Just because you can get away with something at work, doesn’t mean that you should and it definitely doesn’t help you get anywhere.
Get your mind right. Know that you can be successful if you do what you are supposed to. Don’t allow limiting thoughts to distract you or demotivate you. What you want is within your reach, but you have to genuinely believe it.
So, if you have decided the time has come to move on, make sure that you are doing those things that will help put you in the best position to receive the opportunity that you want. Don’t do things that will ultimately work against you. Continue to do those things at work that you know you should…this is the alternaview.
Have you found other things that work? Is this alternaview one that you have integrated into your own life.
