How to avoid being discouraged: Recognize there is no such thing as a setback

Every experience has shaped you, strengthened you, and set you up to take advantage of the future in a new and improved way.

Have you ever experienced a time when you were making progress at something, moving in the right direction and then WHAM…something undesired happens and you feel that now you are regressing?

You feel like what you desire or want to accomplish is now even farther away.

It’s so easy to classify this as a misstep and a setback. I know I have done that way too many times … until something finally dawned on me.

there is no such thing as a setback

Believe it or not, there is nothing that happens that sets us back.

The problem we really have is that we have characterized something as negative, which really is working for our better good.

What has really surfaced is a situation that is designed to propel us forward and we just need to be able to recognize it for what it is. Something has arisen in order to grab our attention so that we will look at things differently and be better prepared in the future to take a quantum leap in the direction we desire.

Trust me, I so get it that often times that really is so hard to see. I have had my fair share of issues and obstacles and I know they have a way of knocking you off your feet.

That’s why we always have to remind ourselves that there always is a bigger picture and often times our greatest opportunities are disguised in our greatest challenges.

the possibility of today

If you currently feel you are experiencing a setback or if one arises in the future, don’t fall into the common trap and view it as something negative and discouraging.

1. Step back and look at things from another perspective.

2. Understand that in one way or another you are being positioned for the success you asked for and that whatever didn’t go as planned is not a setback. It will not hold you back or prevent you from getting to where you want to be.

3. Realize though that it is a reminder that you may need to analyze your current approach and what you are doing. What do you need to differently? What did you learn?

@Rocky: It seems it is always those rough weekends that really test the strength of our beliefs and viewpoints. The good thing about them is that after we make it through them and are still persevering, we know we are one step closer to where we need to be. I think it is important to remind ourselves of those things that will continue to help us push forward and get through those weekends. I am glad to hear you made it through yours and thanks for the comment and visiting the alternaview. Sibyl

Sibyl, from Japan, thanks for another supportive post, especially your advice to step back and view things from another perspective. What we view as a setback is often an opportunity to reassess the situation so that we can turn it totally around. And a setback can create the inward-looking mood that allows us to listen for the intuition that offers us a more creative solution. As you say, setbacks are really just steps on the journey toward success.

@Catrien: Thanks for the comment. It is good to know you agree and I really thought what you said about setbacks allowing us to listen for intuition and more creative solutions was a very important point. Sometimes it really is all about reevaluating and listening to things that you may have otherwise overlooked. Hope all is well in Japan. Sibyl

Personally, I reached the point where I really want to back out with my plans in life. Something that my mind tells me that it isn’t working anymore because of so many problems along my way. On the other hand, my heart reminds me that I’m in the right path I just trust myself. Well now, I’m not yet that in the position where I can tell that I’m 100% on the right track. Yet, I can feel that I’m doing the right thing. Hopefully, I did the right decision in my life.

Mike: Thanks so much for the comment. I think the most important thing you can do is to make certain that you are making decisions that are in line with what you believe and know deep down. What just really feels right? Sometimes it is all about learning to listen and trust our intuition. It doesn’t mean that you will always make the “perfect” decision, but it does mean you will be true to who you are and follow the path you believe in. Everything always works out the way it should and it either works out for our benefit or we have the opportunity to learn something from it and be pointed in the right direction. The key though is always to follow your own compass and intuition.
