How to set yourself up to really get what you want

Have you ever been working to accomplish something and thought to yourself…I am not going to jinx things by thinking they are going to work out.  You decide you are not going to get too attached to the idea that things are going to fall into place because if you assume the best, then they will possibly not work out.

I have even heard people go as far as saying that  “they are hoping for the best, but prepared for the worst”.

The logic behind this thinking is that we have to be realistic with our expectations and never too confident because that could throw everything off. The more you are able to restrain yourself from having too many positive thoughts about how things will work out, the actual better chance they have of being successful.  Many people will claim that overconfidence will actually work against you in the long run.

The alternaview:

The alternaview is that confidence doesn’t jinx things and make them less likely to occur…doubts do. When we really want to set things up to succeed, we actually need to be extremely confident that things will work out.  We need to believe in our ability to make things happen and that we are in a good position for things to go our way.  We need to genuinely believe we have done what we were supposed to and that we are deserving of things going our way.

Why?

Because this is a prerequisite when it comes to making things happen.  You need to reach that threshold number of positive thoughts required to bring things to fruition.  Now, obviously you will also need to devote the right amount of work and attention as well, but you are not likely to be successful unless you also surround your goals with confident thoughts that things will work out.

This is just the way the process works and if we want to put ourselves into a position where we are consistently accomplishing what we want, we will ensure we are having the right thoughts about what we are trying to do.

Our minds can be filled with all types of negative and hidden thoughts that can create doubts.  Consequently, we have to be vigilant about seeking out those limiting thoughts and chipping away at them piece by piece.  In many ways, it is like weeding a garden and once we remove them, we create the space for things to grow and unfold the way they we want them to.

So, if you are currently trying to accomplish something, take a look at the types of thoughts you are having.  Do you feel confident that you will be successful with what you are trying to do?  Are there any limiting thoughts that are creeping up from time to time that are hidden in the back of your mind?  Decide right now that you will successfully work and accomplish what you want. Work continually to eliminate any doubts.  There is no way that hoping for the best and expecting the best will jinx anything…that is the alternaview.

Do you agree with this alternaview?  Do you set yourself up to really get what you want?

Great thoughts! I think that you are absolutely right about confidence making things happen. I think when we say that we don’t want to get excited about something we are really saying “I doubt its going to happen”. I’ve had to stop myself from doing that numerous times recently. Thanks for the reminder :)

Ralph: I agree that when we don’t get excited about something or feel confident that really just translates into expressing doubt and uncertainty. The key is to do exactly what you pointed out…stop yourself every time. Thanks for the reminder and I am on my way to check out your post on staying focused. Have a great weekend. Sibyl

Hi Sibyl,

Doubts are the weeds indeed and to uproot them from the garden of our minds is but a difficult task. So many times, doubts plague our decision/efforts to achieve a certain goal. But the key to moving on is perhaps having faith in oneself as you have already mentioned. You are so right when you say “We need to genuinely believe we have done what we were supposed to and that we are deserving of things going our way.”

I guess the best attitude is to do your bit and not think of the consequences or results. By this, am reminded of what my father says to me when I have doubts “Do your Best and leave the rest ” :)

As usual an inspiring post!

Heena: As always, it is good to hear from you. I like that quote your dad says…it doesn’t get much clearer than that. We really do have to give all that we can and then just confidently await for things to unfold the way they were supposed to. Thanks for the comment and have a great weekend. Sibyl

Hey Sibyl, I’m really enjoying the ideas in your blog posts.

You know when people are scared that they’ll jinx something, their already doubting themselves or the situation. I think hoping for the best outcome is the right approach. And if things don’t turn out like you want, then go for it again in a different way. Success is going on when everybody else would stop.

Faizal: Thanks for the comment. I think your last sentence is a poignant one…Success is going on when everybody else would stop. And, that means we have to work to continually inspire ourselves to keep going for what we want. When we are confident and hoping for the best outcome that really puts positive momentum behind what we are doing. Thanks again for the comment and have a great weekend. Sibyl

Sibyl, thank you for this inspiring post. I thought your words, “you are not likely to be successful unless you also surround your goals with confident thoughts that things will work out,” was especially perceptive. No matter how hard we try to define goals, if our underlying belief is that they are impossible to attain, that’s usually how it turns out. Our negative beliefs are so powerful, and we need to be quite vigilant about facing them because they prevent us from achieving what we hope to accomplish. Catrien: You are so right. It really is all about our underlying beliefs. If we can just find a way to get at them and uproot any that are holding us back, it really opens us to to move forward in the right direction. I also agree that we have to be vigilant about facing our negative beliefs and believe that it is probably one of the most important lessons we can learn. Of course it is easier said than done, but if we continue to allow our underlying beliefs to go unchecked, we will never get where we are trying to go. Thanks for the comment.
