One Thing You Must Do If You Ever Want to Achieve Things Beyond the Ordinary

Many of us have gone through the process of setting goals.  Perhaps we followed the adage old advice to determine what you want and set realistic goals that you are capable of working hard toward and achieving.

I am all for setting realistic goals and working hard to accomplish them.  There is by no means anything wrong with that approach.

But…

What if we really want to push ourselves and do more than we ever thought was possible? What if we want to go beyond what we would consider the ordinary or the expected?

The alternaview

The alternaview is that if we really want to do things that are extraordinary, we need to do more than the ordinary goal setting.  We need to add one more type of goal to our list and go after it.

We need to put a goal on our list that we consider to be HUGE and AMAZING.  Instead of being worried about being realistic, we will make certain only that we are dreaming big and taking into consideration what we really want.

For just this one goal, we will allow ourselves to let go of any preconceived notions that we need to be practical.  We will not allow our limiting thoughts or what we think is possible to influence this goal and we will not impose our normal linear and rational thinking when it comes to setting this goal.

AND…

After we have set this goal and added it to our list, we will then start working toward it. We will not look at this goal as a “stretch” goal, but instead a goal like any other that will just require continued dedication, focus and progress one step at a time. We understand this goal may be realized well into the future, but we will position things in our life and our efforts so we can begin taking steps in the right direction.

We will begin the daily process of eliminating any and every thought that this is something beyond what we are capable of accomplishing.  We will work at chipping away any hidden doubts. We will continually envision how great we will feel when we accomplish this goal.

We will add this extra goal to our list because it will expand our thinking and what we thought would ever be possible. Just by adding this goal to the list sets us up to reach for something amazing that we may have previously decided was unrealistic or unreachable.  And, because we are reaching and working for something that is so amazing and so in line with our desires and what we feel deep down we were meant to do, there is additional positive energy and momentum added to our life overall.

So, if you haven’t done so already, why not add an AMAZING goal to your list and go after it?  Will it possibly evolve or change overtime?  Yes, most likely, but that is the way the process works.  As we work toward something, we gain more clarity and understanding and often times what we seek is refined in a way to fit perfectly into our life. However, in order to even begin the process, you have to set an AMAZING goal and start moving in the right direction…that is the alternaview.

Do you have an AMAZING goal? Do you agree with this alternaview?

Sibyl,

I think you’re absolutely right about setting at least one big, “unreasonable” goal. Even if we don’t ever reach that particular goal, the steps we take towards it will open doors onto other (perhaps even better) opportunities.

My favorite part of this post is where you remind us to treat our BIG goal the same way we treat our smaller goals – one day at a time. I know that, if I start putting big goals into their own category, it becomes much more difficult for me to take action on them.

Day by day – that’s how big goals get done :)

Jeffrey: Thanks for the comment. It is great to have you commenting at the alternaview. I couldn’t agree more about just pursuing your goal and letting things unfold the way they were meant to. As long as you are doing your part, doors will continue to open.

I have also noticed the similarities in the process when it comes to accomplishing any types of goals. Sometimes the way I have built things up in my mind distorts reality and makes them seem bigger and different. However, the reality is just what you said…day by day. The only thing that is different is the goal. Thanks again for the comment. Have a great weekend. Sibyl

Sibyl, thank you so much. Your post is such a wonderful reminder of the importance of the amazing in our lives.
Life itself is amazing – a fact that we somehow manage to overlook in the bustle of our daily routines. And amazing goals connect us to our own highest aspirations. I have found that it is my amazing goal that gives energy to everything else I do – it is as if the power of thinking on a grand scale inspires greater accomplishment in all the smaller goals. It’s good to be here on the alternaview. Hello again from Japan – Catrien Ross.

Catrien: It is great to have you here at the alternaview. I appreciate all of your comments. I think you said it best…”It is as if the power of thinking on a grand scale inspires greater accomplishment in all the smaller goals”. That really is what it is all about. If we are able to tap into our real passions and inspirations, the impact that it will have on other aspects of our life is amazing. Thanks again for the comment and hope you are having a great weekend. Sibyl

I cannot dispute what you have stated here. All of us are capable of doing amazing things if we act on it. I’m currently working on something big and despite the nagging of my mind that it can’t be done, I still am pursuing. I know I can achieved it. :-)

Walter: Thanks for the comment. That is exactly the right mindset to have. I really think that sometime we just have to commit ourselves and go for what we really want. We just can’t hold back and limit ourselves. I know you will achieve that goal…you just have to remain committed and be willing to do whatever it takes. Thanks again for the comment. Sibyl

Walter: You couldn’t be more right, you absolutely can do it and chipping away at those doubts is definitely the right approach. As you stated yourself, we are all capable of doing amazing things…there are no exceptions. It is all about being able to realize this and act on it. Thanks for the comment. It is great to have you here at the alternaview. Have a great weekend. Sibyl

May I simplify? I agree with your approach but I like to employ simple tasking. Every day do something that stretches you enough then repeat the next day. And so on. Nothing big or dramatic. Just something that pushes you. Then new horizons appear and the goal becomes clearer. I find big goal targeting can lose momentum or take a lot of energy that some just don’t have. A stretch towards an intention is a powerful process.

John: Thanks for the comment and you most certainly can simplify. I like that concept of a stretch toward an intention and doing something every day that pushes you a little farther. I do think that is a great method of pursuing big goals and not allowing them to seem overwhelming. All you have to do is to take the next step and that is much easier to figure out and to do. There is by no means wrong with taking many steps day after day in the right direction until you are successful. Thank you for the comment and the additional perspective. It was a real good one. Jayden: Welcome to the alternaview. Thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment. I totally agree with you that goal setting can sometimes be difficult, but it is something we need to do. I think once we learn the process that works for us, we can really get better and better at setting goals and attaining them. Thanks again for the comment.

About me goal setting & achievement is two different thing. Setting of a goal is your hand but achievement is not yours. If you believe on luck you better to know the difference…. I hope. About me Luck is one and most important factor to achieve any goal.

Manoj: Thanks for the comment and stopping by the atlernaview. I agree that setting goals and achievement are 2 different things. We definitely need both. We have to set the goal and then always make sure we are moving in the right direction and making progress step by step. Thanks again for the comment.

Hi Sibyl,

I agree that an audaciously big goal is essential to achieve extraordinary things in life. However, the goal must be an emotional one that will bring tears to our eyes when we think about it in order for us to really strive when the going gets tough. That’s what separates people who are dream makers and dream fakers. Dream makers are people who will do whatever it takes to achieve their goals. On the other hand, dream fakers are people who says they will achieve something and never take actions to achieve them.

To all dream makers, you can do it! :)

Regards,
Edmund

Being a dream maker is really what it is about. I love the way you used those terms dream maker and dream faker. That is a great way of putting it. I also agree with what you said that dream makers are people who will give all they can to following their dreams and making them become a reality. Thanks for the great comment.

Hi Sibyl,

Everyone has a dream and a lot of them live in their dreams…literally. I think a lot of people live in their dream for their entire lives, not because they do not want their dreams to come true but because they do not want it hard enough. People take action to reach for their dreams, and there are people who give them all for their dreams. Guess what…even for those who gave them all may not materialize their dreams then what give other people who do not move a finger the right to succeed?

It all comes down to one question:” do you want it bad enough?”

Great post~!

Regards,

Chet

Chet: Thanks so much for the comment and dropping by. I do think what you said is so important when it comes to dreams. Is it something that you just feel you were meant to do and are you following your own truth. I think if that is the case, that can really give you the drive and motivation to be persistent and diligent. Than you again for dropping by and taking the time to comment.
