When we realize there is no such thing as luck, we set ourselves up for continual success

Have you ever thought to yourself that you were lucky? So many people will look at the good things in their lives and decide their good fortune or circumstances are a result of being lucky or being at the right place at the right time.

No Such Thing as Luck : The alternaview

The alternaview is that there is no such thing as luck. When good things are happening in our lives and things are falling into place perfectly, they are meant to happen and are a result of something, or many things, we did right. We should never miss out on the opportunity to give ourselves credit for everything that is going right in our lives by reaching the conclusion that we were just lucky.

We are always quick to analyze why things are going wrong when we experience undesirable events or challenges. And, many time in order to feel better about the circumstances we face, we will tell ourselves that everything happens for a reason, which is very much true. However, we shouldn’t dismiss that same logic just because things have gone our way by attributing them to luck.

Just as there is value in understanding and learning when things go wrong, there is also value in understanding and learning when things have gone right. If we think that the good things are just there because we were lucky or in the right place at the right time, we will miss out on understanding what we actually did that created the good circumstances. And, those are the things and approaches we want to repeat and integrate more and more into our lives. It is yet another way to live and to learn and continue to create good circumstances in life.

We need to realize that we have much more control over our lives than we may ever have imagined. It is not luck that is creating the good conditions in our lives, it is of our own doing. When good things appear, it is because we determined what we wanted, envisioned having it, believed we were capable and worked until it became a reality. None of that has anything to do with luck or being at the right place at the right time. We created the positive chain of momentum.

So, take a look at everything in your life where you may have felt you were lucky or that things just somehow managed to fall into place perfectly. Realize these circumstances didn’t just luckily or magically appear. There was something that you did right or a good approach that you had that should be understood and is most likely worth repeating. There is no such thing as luck, it is all of your own doing…that is the alternaview.

Sibyl, such a good post, thank you. But I had to laugh, because believing in luck is deeply ingrained here in Japan (and in China). That belief alone might help to explain much about the sense of resignation about their lives that many people here seem to have. Your insight reminds us that our intentions and actions are what actually start the energy moving – not passivity, or wishful thinking. From the mountains in Japan, hello again – Catrien Ross.

That is an interesting point that in so many places, luck is ingrained deeply into so many people’s thoughts about their circumstances. I think though that there is something to be said about not buying in to the belief that we don’t play an important role in influencing how things play out. And, I do agree with your statement about intentions and actions starting the movement of energy. Hope all is well in Japan. Sibyl

I love the feel of luck though I wouldn’t call it luck rather a positive mindset or outlook. ‘Lucky’ people simply notice more good stuff, snuff out opportunities, are outgoing and thus popular and don’t dwell on the past or bad times. Added together they appear to be more fortunate but, in reality, it’s merely their own outlook bouncing right back to them. They have an upbeat aura about them which radiates good into their lives. Be happy, be lucky!

John: Thanks for the comment. I couldn’t agree more. People who are continually experiencing good things really do just have the right type of outlook and that continues to bring more and more good into their lives. I think that is also why we should make sure we realize that when good things happen to us it means we have done something right and have had the right outlook. This is something we want to continue to repeat so that we can set ourselves up to experience everything the way we desire. Thanks again for the comment. Sibyl

I like to share with you my little thought. Just to put things mathematically, we live in a world dictated by randomness, be it the lottery you are thinking about or the encountering of that dream girl/boy. There are 50% of good things, lucky things, happy things, or whatever you want to call it around us in our world, and at the same time there are 50% of bad things, unlucky things or unhappy things just as there’s equal positive and negative charges inside an atom. You can name any event and there’s always an opposite event that exists alongside, eg, winning the lottery and be rich, then there’s also not winning the lottery and be poor. There is something called standard deviation though, meaning that it’s possible for a person to have more of the good things or more of the bad things, whom he or she can then be looked at as lucky or unlucky. Just remember – don’t sit there and do nothing, cos nothing comes from nothing. The people who gain >50% of the good things are the ones who put their effort in to maximise their chances by being positive, having a strong sense of belief and the right beliefs, and look at unfavourable situations as only a guide to what not to do or what to avoid. That 50-50 scale is indifferent and can definitely be tipped, it’s only up to you which way you want to tip it.

Spock: Thanks for the comment and welcome to the alternaview. Thank you also for the analysis from a mathematical perspective. I thought it was definitely interesting. I also thought what you said about being able to maximize your chances by being positive was an interesting angle. It seemed to suggest that you have more control than you think about the conditions and things you attract to you. We really do have the ability to tip the scale in our favor and I think that is important and something that should be focused on. Again, very interesting perspective. Thanks for sharing it.
