Understanding One of the Most Important Principles that Will Always Give us What we Desire

The More you Give, the More you Receive: The alternaview

Imagine a world where the universal principle, “the more you give…the more you receive”, was played out immediately. Where there was literally no delay between giving something and then receiving something more in return. Imagine everyone being able to easily see the direct correlation between what they gave and what they received because it was too obvious to miss.

So, if you gave a $100 donation to your favorite charity, immediately after you gave the donation, you would look in your bank account and there would be an extra $500 (since it is always the case that you receive much more than you ever gave).

Or, imagine the impact that easily seeing an immediate return of “the more you give…the more you receive” would have on corporations. They would always be supporting charitable causes, the needs of the community, and their employees, because they would easily see the positive impact that giving had on their bottom line. There would literally be competition between companies to see who could give the most because they would know who ever did, would be the most successful.

And, since “the more you give…the more you receive” applies to every situation and experience and not just our financial well being, imagine the impact that being able to see an immediate return would have on relationships and interactions between people. People would focus on doing random acts of kindness and immediately they would notice other people being nice to them in return and trying to help them out.  Everyone would easily see the connection between being kind and generous and the many benefits they got in return.

Now, we all know there is not an immediate response system when it comes to “the more you give…the more you receive”.  In the majority of instances, the principle does not play out instantly and it is not always obvious that the principle is at work in everyone’s lives. As a result, when people reflect on the good things in their life, everyone doesn’t necessarily associate those good things with the fact that they have followed the principle.  It is not always obvious that in one way or another, they have given something and received benefits in their life in return.

Many people will attribute their success to other things, such as hard work, good decision making, commitment, perseverance, etc.  While those things most definitely play a role, we have to make certain we don’t overlook one of the most important things that is also working and contributing to life unfolding in the way we desire, and that really is following the principle “the more you give…the more you receive”. If we are genuinely committed to giving in any and all ways we can, there are no limits placed on what we will receive in return.

Just because there is no immediate response and it is not always easy to see the principle in action, doesn’t mean that it is any less true and not at work all the time. Just because there is not a scorecard that is reconciled daily and you may not instantly see the benefits of your giving, doesn’t minimize the reality that the principle is fail proof and will always eventually return benefits as long as we genuinely give.  The key is finding a way to consistently and sincerely integrate this principle into all aspects of our life and weave it into our thinking.  Once we are able to make it a part of who we are and we are committed to always giving something positive to the people and things around us, we will be amazed at how it positively impacts every aspect of our life. It may not always be immediately obvious and staring us in the face, but we should always know that the principle, “the more you give…the more you receive” is always at work…that is the alternaview.

Sibyl, really nice, and your alternaview belief that the principle works is a positive reminder. Why do so many adults feel keeping scorecards is so necessary? Do you think it results from an educational system that prizes competition over cooperation? Are we afraid that we may lose out in some way? Why do we spend so much of our life calculating the cost of giving? It’s interesting how good we can feel about gifts we joyfully give with no thought of return. So many so-called gifts are actually tokens of social obligation that bind us out of some false sense of duty or fear such as “we had better give or reciprocate, or else.” If we truly think about the gifts we have in our own lives we soon realize that the universe is an incredibly generous giver. Resonating to that universal wisdom continues to bring gifts into our lives, and inspires us to keep giving generously from the best part of ourselves. Catrien: Thanks for your comment and I couldn’t agree more with everything that you said. I really thought what you said about giving generously from the best part of ourselves was poignant. I also appreciated your comment about the generosity of the universe. I think once we are able to find a way to understand and appreciate the process, we are better able to see it working in our own life. Thanks again for the comment. Sibyl

Charity and giving is such a core human concept.
It’s pity that it is largely ignored, when now it should be one of our primary focuses.
As humans, its seems all we care about is the next car and the next house, not the smiles and the happiness that comes from making others happy by simply sharing our gifts with them.

aDeeb: Thanks for the comment and welcome to the alternaview. I do agree that it is easy to get caught up with those things that are not nearly as important as generosity. Once we are able to focus and integrate giving into our life and all we do, it is amazing how things will continually fall into place. Thanks again for the comment. It is nice to have you commenting here. Sibyl

dav: Thanks for the comment and I am so glad that you like the alternaview. I think your question is a very important one because we really can become overwhelmed by the number of people that are always in need of assistance. And, I think it can become less overwhelming once we identify other ways to give beyond just financial donations. Perhaps it is a smile or just making a nice comment. In my book, it all counts and the most important thing is that we are generously giving in whatever way we feel most comfortable. Thanks again for the comment. Sibyl
