What you Should Do When you REALLY, REALLY Want Something

Have you ever wanted something very, very badly?  You have found something that you feel you were absolutely meant to have or accomplish.  As a result, you are on a mission.  You have set your goal posts and decided there is no turning back and you will not quit until you get what you desire.  Your intensity increases, you give up doing other things and you relentlessly pursue your goal.  You have become solely focused on doing all you can to accomplish or get what you want.

Is this a winning formula for success?  Is this the best way to guarantee that you will eventually get what you want?

Success Through Balance: The alternaview

The alternaview is that when we are really interested in accomplishing anything, our best approach is by all means to commit to our goal and work hard, but we have to balance out our intensity and also have those times where we are relaxed and calm. We are aware of our desire and committed to what we have to do, but we are also aware of the importance of not pushing too much and too hard.

We always need to check ourselves and make certain we haven’t fallen into the trap of wanting something so much that essentially we have become over attached to getting it. We have to be aware of where we are balancing out and make certain those times where we are intense and working really hard are complimented by other times where we are just calm and at ease.  Where essentially we have let go a little and we are just going with the flow.

Although it is important to us that we reach our goals, we recognize the importance of not allowing our intensity to increase beyond the point where it is beneficial.  We keep the intensity of our desire in check and make certain we are not overdoing it because one day we may look up and realize that we have become obsessed.  We also take advantage of all the positive things that come from being relaxed and calm. These are often the times when we are better able to put things into perspective and come up with the best ideas and plans.

If you are currently working toward anything, take a moment to examine what you are doing.  There is a perfect balanced approach to accomplishing anything that requires us to sometimes be ON and have our intensity turned up to 100 degrees, and other times to turn it down so that overall we are striking that perfect balance.  It is all about hitting that perfect equilibrium…that is the alternaview.

Are you hitting your equilibrium?  Do you agree with this alternaview?

I think it’s important to pursue a goal wholeheartedly, but not to the point where all perspective is lost. A balance is good, because that allows the flexibility to change direction, reassess, evaluate. Commitment is good, obsession is not so good!

Sibyl, thank you for this post. When we become attached to outcomes we can be devastated when the results do not meet our expectations. Equilibrium comes from being able to step back from our goals to actually perceive what is happening along the way. Sometimes the goal posts change, and if we are so focused on what we think we absolutely must have we can miss the gifts that do appear for us. As you point out, the willingness to hold our desires lightly (as opposed to tightly) can be a key to better balance in our lives.

Catrien: I think you summed it up very nicely with the phrase…the willingness to hold our desires lightly. I think if we can figure out how to do that while also pursuing our goals, that is when things really begin to unfold the way we desire. I am on my way to try out that exercise. I actually read about it earlier on your site, but now it is time to try it out. I will let you know my thoughts and am looking forward to it. Sibyl
