The Best Thing We Can Do When We Have Been Working Too Much or Too Hard

You know those weeks or months when you have just had a lot going on? Overall, you have managed to accomplish a lot, but you are feeling tired and a little worn down.  You have been pushing yourself for sometime and it has taken its toll. The challenge is that you still have some more things you really need to get done in order to stay on track.  There are additional things that you need to focus your attention on and complete.

So, you decide that you are going to push yourself and keep going.  You are going to keep going despite the fact that you are tired and not at your best.  You just have to get these remaining things done and the best way to make sure that happens is to continue to push yourself and do anything and everything necessary to cross the finish line.

But, this really shouldn’t be our approach.  There is an alternaview we should be aware of.

Learn to Relax: The alternaview

When you have been going at something for a while, you are feeling tired, and you have spent all your physical and emotional energy…the best thing to do is not to push yourself harder, but rather to stop, take some time, relax and just let things be what they are.

When we have been running at 100mph on the treadmill of life day after day and have continually pushed ourselves, it is understandable that we just may need to slow down and regroup.  We probably have pushed ourselves a little too far and it is time to give ourselves a break.  It is time to release some of the pressure, remove any false deadlines we have subjected ourselves to and just take some time to return to our normal state where we are more relaxed, stress free and not wound up.

Why?

Because the reality is that you will never be effective when you are pushing too hard or forcing yourself to continue accomplishing things.  You will never get the best results that are possible when you are tired of pushing yourself, but feel you have no other choice but to keep on going.  You always have a choice and you need to make the right one because continuing to push yourself is not going to generate the kind of energy that you need.  It is not going to get you where you really need to be.

It is at these times where we just need to let go. And, while that is much easier said than done because the remaining things you have to do may be weighing on your mind, you have to choose to take a “time out” and just relax.  You need to calmly experience the current moment and figure out a way to enjoy it without worrying or focusing on all the things you still need to get done.

Your goal should be to restore your mindset.  We need to be able to reach a point where we are relaxed, re-energized and feeling good. This is the type of energy we need and once we let go of everything that has been overwhelming us, it will be much easier to reach this frame of mind.  And, the best thing is that once we are able to really let go, that is when the answers come and when we can really return to being at our best.  There will no longer be any need to push ourselves.

How to use this alternaview (complete all steps below):

  1. Commit to relaxing.  Decide that you are just going to let things go.
  2. Realize that your world will not fall apart just because you are taking a break and relaxing.
  3. Let go of any expectations that you must keep going.
  4. Throw out any false deadlines.
  5. Acknowledge and give yourself credit for all that you have already accomplished.
  6. Reflect on what truly matters and is important.
  7. Be grateful to be exactly where you are.
  8. Exercise, get a massage, do yoga, meditate or do anything else that relaxes you.
  9. Realize that things will unfold just as they should once you let go.
  10. Have some fun and laugh.
  11. Remind yourself that everything will be okay and unfold exactly as it is supposed to.
  12. Experience the current moment.  Take some deep breaths and enjoy the moment.
  13. Let your relaxation override any thinking of what you should be doing.
  14. Embrace and enjoy not doing anything and just relaxing.
  15. Be content and just allow things to fall into place.

Conclusion

We all want to accomplish everything we can.  However, we have to realize there are good ways to do that and then there are others that just will not work.  You have to re-energize, get your mind totally relaxed and just wait until it is ready to engage again.  You can’t push yourself too much or to hard, sometimes you just have to let things be…that is the alternaview.

Hi Sibyl, I agree that when we find ourselves working too hard, one of the worst things we can do is to work harder. We can get burnt out easily that way. I feel this when I am writing in my blog or doing freelance work. Writing articles nonstop can drain me out and take away the fun. Letting go and taking a break is a great way to regain our energy and focus back on our tasks. Great post, thanks Sibyl!

Hulbert: Thanks for the comment. I must admit that I discovered this the hard way, but I am so glad it finally dawned on me that I need to take a break from time to time. You really can push yourself too far and, as you mentioned, when that occurs the enjoyment in what you are doing completely can disappear. I now have a new ritual of stepping away and just letting go until I full totally ready to reengage. Thanks Hulbert for the comment. It is great to have you commenting here.

Hi Sybil,
Great advice to hear in our stressed out world. If we don’t replenish ourselves, we are out of balance and risk burnout.

You make a good point about how stress isn’t inherent in all the things we are doing, it comes from how we think about things. This understanding presents the possibility for inner transformation. Stressful thinking saps our energy. When we can stop thinking in stress-inducing ways, we actually feel lighter and can accomplish more – happily. Or we choose not to accomplish so much – happily.

Gail: Thank you so much for the comment. I really liked what you said about the importance of noticing the way we are thinking. You are so right that we can think in ways that are just stress inducing and totally drain our energy. I also definitely agree that when we are able to relax and stop those thoughts that are draining our energy, we really can be restored and find a way back to the place where we are relaxed and productive. Thank you again Gail for the comment. It is great to have you commenting here. Sibyl

Oh Sibyl, for me it was fear that got me going when the going got tough. Stopping meant courage to see what was going on and taking responsibility for my own thinking and finding solutions that were my own. That sometimes looked very scary and doing the same old same old and forcing things looked better than the alternative. Of course now I know better, I watch when I act like a donkey, that keeps going on the treadmill and get back to behaving like a creative human being. xox Wilma

Wilma: Thanks for the comment. I really liked how you put that…stopping meant the courage to see what was going on and take responsibility for your own thinking. I think that is so important and adds so much to this post. You are so right that we can sometimes convince ourselves that we are reacting appropriately and doing what we should, when we are actually only responding to fear of the unknown. Thank you again for your comment. I really appreciate it.

Sibyl:

Great article I should read frequently. I do have quite the tendency to push and push myself. I loved the part about false deadlines. I found myself doing that a lot. I recently looked at a project I was involved in and upon discussing it with the other people involved we found that each person on the team felt that we had deadlines that weren’t necessary. Our one month project could be spread out over several months and everyone would end up much saner in the end.

Thanks!

Leisa: Welcome to the alternaview. Thank you so much for the comment. Isn’t it crazy how those false deadlines can seem so real and put pressure on you. I am always trying to make certain I am on the lookout for them because sometimes you really have to look closely and put things into perspective so that you don’t feel overwhelmed. Thank you again for the comment. I am glad you enjoyed it.
