Choose to Find Your Own Answers and Everything will Fall into Place

From the time we are born we are given direction and guidance about how we should behave, what we should do, what we should become, what beliefs we should subscribe to, etc…the list goes on and on.  Just about everyone around us freely gives advice and can have an impact on who we are.  Society tries to shape us, friends try to influence us and parents try to create and mold who we ultimately become.

As a result, many people reach the assumption that as long as they listen and follow the direction that is given and as long as they develop as they are instructed, they will be successful and happy.  If I listen to my parents instructions to work hard, follow my friend’s advice that makes sense, and fulfill society’s expectation to graduate from college and be career focused, I can’t but help to be a success.  Everything will just eventually fall into place.

But…not so fast.  There is an alternaview we should realize.

Follow Your Instincts: The alternaview

Just because you follow all instructions, listen to advice, never break a rule, get a college degree, get a good job and work hard doesn’t mean you are guaranteed success, happiness and a life where you are totally fulfilled.  Of course, doing all those things can definitely work to your advantage.  However, in order to guarantee your own success, happiness and fulfillment, you have to live a life where you are satisfying your own ambitions and desires. Where you are living out your own truth you have discovered and doing the things you know deep inside you were meant to do.

And, that means you can’t simply conform to society or blindly follow the advice of other people because in order to find that true lasting success and happiness, you have to be authentic and true to who you are.  That is the only way.  There are no exceptions or shortcuts.  You have to find your own answers, live out your own dreams and become the person you know you were meant to be because anything else is short lived and not fully satisfying.

So, if you look at your life and realize it is not ultimately what you want it to be.  If you think there is something missing, perhaps you have just been going through the motions, you just feel so-so about your job, or if you feel you aren’t doing what you were meant to do…

know there definitely is something more.

If way too many people are trying to guide and direct your life, or if you just can’t really figure out exactly what you are passionate about and what you are supposed to be doing with your life…

know that the answers will come if you commit to finding your own answers and direction because they are an essential piece in your life’s puzzle.

Once we find our way to what lies deep inside, we are on a path that will unfold perfectly.  We will experience things in ways we never have before.  We will know with absolute certainty that we are traveling on the right path, in the right direction and at the right speed.

There is nothing else that is as satisfying and this satisfaction will give us momentum and passion to continue everyday, to develop and accomplish more and more, and even things we may have never thought possible. This is what living is really all about and how we discover lasting happiness and success.  This is the only route to being absolutely fulfilled.

How to use this alternaview:

1. Don’t listen to other people unless they make sense.  Getting advice and feedback from trusted sources is a good thing you should be open to.  However, you can’t blindly follow the advice of others.  You have to evaluate for yourself if the advice they are giving you makes sense.  If you are not sure, then take your time and think through things.

2. Don’t allow people to interfere with your gut instincts. Again, good advice is great, but it is also important to strengthen your confidence in finding your own answers.  What just feels right to you?  Get comfortable asking yourself the tough questions.

3. Get out of your own way. Don’t buy into your own limiting thoughts.  Dream big, believe and go after what you really want.  Don’t talk yourself out of anything because you feel it is not realistic, too late for you to change direction, too much of a stretch or any other excuse…go after what you want with undying passion.

4.  Be patient and know the answers will come along with progress. It usually takes some time for the answers to come and to see progress.  That is why you have to be patient and allow things to unfold slowly, but surely.

5. Be open minded and willing to explore whatever seems right. Expose yourself to things around you that seem interesting.  Get out of your box and explore beyond your comfort zone.

6. Look for clues and signs. Sometimes you will get the answers from your gut instincts, but other times you will literally have signs staring you in the face.  In order to notice them, you have to be looking.  Look for them, listen to them and pay attention.

7. Inspire yourself. It is amazing how much inspiration you can find within yourself and you need to be a consistent source of inspiration.  Inspire yourself to find your passion and your own answers by reminding yourself that when you do, it will be so worthwhile.  Find as many ways as possible throughout the day to give yourself shots of inspiration.

8. Enjoy right now (even though you know there is more tomorrow). It is important to enjoy what is currently in front of you and what you are experiencing even though you may be moving toward something you may desire more in the future.  There is nothing wrong with setting goals and working toward things you want to accomplish, but it is important that you don’t overlook your current experience and the importance of enjoying the moment.

Conclusion

Although certain people and aspects of society may be able to guide us in the right direction, the only compass we know for certain is fail proof and will guarantee our forward movement is within us.  The key is that you just have to find it, learn how to hear it, and then follow its guidance and direction.  You can’t let anyone tell you things that only you can really discover for yourself.  Search out your own answers, find your own truth and then follow it…that is the alternaview.

Hi Sibyl,

One of my BIG pet peeves is when people do things just because everyone else is doing it. There is no faster way to lose signt of your own purpose and reason for being here. Although my kids are still quite young (3 and 6), I always encourage them to listen to their own “mind, body and heart” when they’re making decisions about something.
And I’m glad that your last point was about enjoying the now – this seems to be a running theme for me this week! The universe is telling me something for sure…

Thanks for the great reminders!

Tisha: Thanks for the great comment. I really thought what you said about encouraging your kids to listen to themselves was so important. This is really a technique that can be instilled at a young age and strengthened and developed as we get older. It is so important, as you mentioned, to never lose sight of your own purpose and reason for being here. That means we have to always make certain we are rally doing all we can to stay true to ourselves. Thanks for the comment and I know you agree that there is nothing better than staying in the NOW :)

Hi Sibyl, thanks for this strong post. You have summed up almost everything about believing in oneself here in this post. We can overcome our limiting beliefs even when other people say we cannot do it. We just need to stay opened minded, have faith in ourselves, and keep pushing ourselves. We are more capable of what we think we can do, but we have to follow our gut instinct. Thanks for reminding of us all those things here!

Hulbert: Thanks for the comment and you are so right that it is all about believing in ourselves and not allowing anyone else to throw us off our game. The reality is that we may always encounter people who are trying to interfere with where we are going. However, if we remain focused and confident, we will always end up exactly where we desire. Thanks again for the comment. It is great to have you commenting here. Sibyl

Sibyl, most people who have had an interesting life never could have predicted it. As a career counselor I often found that people who went their own way often unearthed unexpected interests, wonderful job opportunities and they fully used their talents. They ended up having rich and wonderful lives. The one that went the ‘normal and safe’ paths were often fearful and very less capable of dealing with curved balls in their lives.
The only way to live life is experience the unexpected, so you are spot on in my books, xox Wilma

Wilma: Thanks for the comment. I couldn’t agree more…the only way to really live life is to experience the unexpected. Although it can be disconcerting to not just follow the general pattern of life that everyone expects you to follow, it is far better to follow our own. Sometimes you really just have to take some risks and go for what you feel in your gut is right. Thanks again for the comment.

This post is so empowering, Sybil! If people follow your advice, it is the end of victimhood and waiting for life to happen. I especially like #3 – get out of your own way. If our lives are not flowing, there is only one reason: we are somehow stuck. When we figure out where that stuck place is (hint: usually in our thoughts), we can let it go so we are open (#5) once again.

Gail: Thanks for the comment. I really do agree with you that living according to your own truth is the end of sitting back and waiting for life to happen. Getting out of your way is so important and often times a major obstacle. Your comment actually brought to mind that great post you wrote specifically on #3 and getting unstuck about a month ago. That was a really good one by the way. Thanks again for the insightful comment. Sibyl

Hi Sybil,
I sometimes wonder if the reason people choose to blindly follow the directions of others is because that means they don’t have to take personal responsibility for the outcome, and more particularly they don’t have to take responsibility for failure. However, not following your personal compass is perhaps the biggest failure. Once we realise this, it becomes easier to take back the control. It’s just so important to run your own race. The alternative is an artificial life that is not satisfying or empowering, and provides no opportunity for authentic growth. This is a really important post you’ve written, thanks for sharing your insights.

Topi: Thanks for the comment. I think you pose an interesting insight and it really may be the case that it is so much easier to follow other people’s advice becasue then you don’t have to be 100% accountable if things don’t go as planned. I guess in many ways it spreads some of the risk. But, as you also mentioned, we all have to follow our own compass and take risks even if that means we fail and are completely responsible. Thank you again for the comment. Sibyl
