How to Always Perform in an Amazing Way

We all have had those experiences where we tapped into something within us that allowed us to do something amazing. Perhaps there was a day that you had an amazing performance on the golf course or on the tennis court.  Or, maybe you wrote an amazing composition, an amazing blog post, blew away your last exam or performed so well in a business meeting that even you were in awe.  These are the times that we love.  Where everything just perfectly flows and we produce some of our best work and results.

But, then it ends.

The next time we perform the same task or activity, things are not nearly as amazing and they don’t flow like they did on those days when we were at our best. We can’t really figure out exactly why we are unable to consistently raise our performance to that superior level.  Sometimes we are “on”, but others times we are “off”, and we are unable to pinpoint exactly what we need to do to consistently perform at our best.

We try to reinvent the same circumstances and frame of mind and we search for ways to tap into that side of us again. We may spend countless hours practicing whatever it is we are trying to master, we work on strengthening our skills, we read books, we work with instructors, we study harder and for more time.  We do anything and everything we can to practice and improve our skills so that we hopefully can consistently achieve the high level of performance and results we are looking for.

And while doing all of these things will definitely strengthen our ability to perform, the one thing we may overlook that will really guarantee our ability to consistently perform amazingly is the alternaview.

Improving your Performance: The alternaview

Whenever we are trying to tap into that side of us that is amazing, where creativity and perfection just naturally flow, the best thing we can figure out how to do … is simply master how to get out of our own way. We need to figure out how to not obstruct our ability to perform in an amazing way.  We need to figure out how to not be a barrier because in the majority of instances, that is really what is preventing us from consistently performing amazingly.

We are standing in the way of our own greatness.  We are over thinking, trying too hard, holding limiting beliefs, or doing other things that are actually working against us and our ability to truly perform at the highest of levels.

However, we usually don’t even recognize this as an issue.  We convince ourselves that we have to be in complete control and think our way through whatever we are trying to do.   We think the magical solution is that we need to practice more, work harder, or invest more time and energy in what we are doing. We have not figured out that what we really need to learn to do is to just let go.  To get out of our way so that we can let the side of us that performs with ease and perfection take over.

And, although figuring out how to consistently do this is by all means easier said than done, once we really understand how to get out of our own way, we will be able to always perform in the most amazing way.

How to use this alternaview:

1. Realize that you really do need to get out of the way. You have to sincerely desire to get out of your own way and be willing to do anything necessary to do so.  You have to realize there are things you have been doing that have been preventing you from performing well and commit to identifying exactly what they are and working to eliminate them.  If you aren’t at the top of your game consistently, there is a reason why.

2. No needless thoughts. Stop the endless thought cycle. You need to be able to figure out how to stop all the thousands of thoughts that consistently run through your mind when you are trying to perform and also before and after you perform.  In order to really connect with that side of you that performs with ease, you can’t be distracted by needless thoughts.  There are times when you want to and need to think, but you need to be disciplined with your thinking and not just think needless thoughts by default.  Some people can slow down the thoughts that are running through their minds with meditation or relaxation exercises.  Other people do yoga, get a massage, go for a walk, read, etc.  Do whatever you can to calm your mind and get to that place where you have a peace of mind.  This is a prerequisite for being able to perform amazingly.

3. Eliminate limiting beliefs. Don’t be your worse critic and feed yourself limiting beliefs and thoughts that will only hold you back.  Catch yourself every single time you begin to think a limiting or negative thought about your ability to perform.  Refuse to buy in to any limiting beliefs or allow any negative thought patterns to just run through your mind.  Choose to focus your mind somewhere else and on all the reasons you can perform well.

4. Know your potential. Realize you really do have the ability to perform amazingly every single time.  Your prior great performances were not a fluke or a stroke of luck, they were the evidence that you had gotten out of your own way enough to allow your amazing side to take over.

5. Enjoy yourself while you are performing. If you do not have peace of mind and if you are not enjoying yourself, then there is no way you are going to be able to connect to that side of you that allows you to perform in a great way.  Amazing performance flows from a state of ease and enjoyment.

6. Eliminate distractions. Don’t get caught up in any distractions because this will only interfere with your ability to perform well, even if the distraction occurs prior to your performance.  No fighting with other people, arguing, getting way too worked up about something, etc.  Your number one goal is to maintain your peace of mind and anything that gets in the way of this is a distraction.

7. Appreciate this Ability. Be in awe of your ability to perform in an amazing way.  Even if you have only achieved it on certain occasions, never overlook how truly great it is to be able to perform in an amazing way.

Conclusion

While you definitely need to practice and strengthen your skills, don’t fool yourself that this alone will get you where you need to be. Don’t overlook the fact that one of the most important aspects of performing in an amazing way, is to get out of your own way. You have to clear the path and remove all of the obstacles and barriers, many of which you have created … that is the alternaview.

Hi Sibyl, it is interesting that we can be in our own way and that our performance can so vary because of that.
For me it is the ego, if I am more busy paying attention to my ego talk I am not focusing my attention on where it should be, on as you say having fun and being present. xox Wilma

Wilma: I think it is so easy to overlook the fact that we may be doing things that are working against us. As you mentioned, our minds can often become distracted and instead of focusing intently on what we are doing, we have other thoughts and things monopolizing our thinking attention. I think it is all about being aware and making certain you really aren’t in your own way … and if you are, doing what you have to in order to get out of the way. Thanks for the comment Wilma. Much appreciated.

Thanks Sibyl for this post. I like the tips that you offer here. I think eliminating limiting beliefs is essential to our growth and success. Otherwise, we would give up too soon because of the beliefs we have in our minds. Thanks for sharing Sibyl

Dia: Thanks for the comment. I am glad that you enjoyed the post. Isn’t it crazy how limiting beliefs can just sneak up on us and hold us back if we don’t do something to control and eliminate them? Limiting beliefs can really demotivate us and lead us astray. It is all about chipping away at them one by one. Thank you again for the comment and dropping by the alternaview. It is great to have you commenting here. Sibyl – alternaview

I have had that experience of greatness many times yet I’m confused as to why I cannot summon it at will. What you have stated here is something I need to think about if I were to understand the source of such greatness. It may not be easy, but a little each day will make a big difference. :-)

Walter: Thanks for the comment. Repeatedly tapping into greatness is a common challenge, but I think you hit the nail on the head with your comment. It really may not be easy, but as long as we work on getting better and better at it each day, eventually we will find a consistent approach and way to our greatness that we can tap into. It is all about discovering what works and then strengthening those things that are working for you … and eliminating those that are not. Thanks again for the comment. Sibyl – alternaview

I think you’re so correct when you say to “Stop the endless thought cycle.” I’ve seen people (and sometimes myself) completely frozen by their thought cycles (like a computer program stuck in a bad loop). It can take something quite extreme to break out of this cycle. Sometimes when I feel myself getting stuck in a loop, I just think “Stop!” and then clear my thoughts and concentrate on only letting the positive ones back in.

Claire: Welcome to the alternaview. Thank you so much for the comment. I think it is easy to become accustomed to the endless thought cycle that runs through our minds on an everyday basis. However, getting control and stopping the cycle, as you described will ultimately get us a peace of mind that will set us up to achieve everything we desire. Thank you for sharing your approach and what works for you. I think noticing what is going on in your mind and then choosing to stop, as you mentioned, is really a good technique. It is all about choosing to take control and not just allow our thoughts to take over. Thank you again for the comment. I really appreciate it. Sibyl – alternaview

Hi Sibyl, these are some pretty solid ways to perform in an amazing way. I like number three. In order to unleash our true potential, we have to stop the inner critic inside of us. If we have a mental block inside of us, it’s only going to prevent us from performing 100%. Once we get this out of this, we just have to go out there and try our best. Thanks for showing us how to get out of our own way.

Hulbert: Thanks for the comment. This post actually made me think a lot about your posts because the I feel that the people you have posted on all have figured out the formula and mastered getting out of their own way. It is so important and as you mentioned, eliminating limiting beliefs is key. In fact, I would say that this is usually one of the major things working against us, even if we don’t recognize we have limiting beliefs. Once we get control of those beliefs and eliminate them, we can really start to see the positive results. Thanks again for the comment. Sibyl – alternaview

Hi Sibyl,

Your post got me thinking. I was wondering, if I totally got out of my own way, I would be present for every moment – and that would be amazing. Whether or not all moments would be filled with success, ecstasy, etc., I couldn’t say. This made me think about the definition of amazing. To me, amazing is being awake to the wonder of the moment, to be alive to what is happening right now. The moment may not look like something we commonly call amazing, but if we are open to it, we actually live it.

I am a huge fan of getting out of your own way, and when we do that, we have no idea what the moment will bring. I enjoy living in this space of not knowing. From here, even something the mind might call a failure could be amazing!

Gail: Thank you so much for the comment. It was so insightful and I totally agree that if we can figure out how to totally get out of our way all the time, it means that we are continually present. And, as you said, amazing doesn’t necessarily mean the common definition of amazing, but rather the ability to appreciate and experience the fullness of every moment. I think the definition of amazing for us changes and evolves as we get better and better at getting out of our own way. I can tell from your blog and your writing that not only are you a fan of getting out of your own way, but also that you have figured out how to continually do it:) Your posts are always a wonderful expression and illustration of what happens when we get out of our own way. Thank you so much for the comment and all the insights you share. I really appreciate all of them. Have a great Weekend. Sibyl

Hi Sibyl!

Nice reminders on how to avoid sabotaging ourselves. I think most people focus on the outside circumstances and forget to do the inner work necessary to really get at what’s holding us back from success. I like that one of your tips was remembering to enjoy yourself because in this world of “better, faster, more, more, more!!!” it’s so easy to overlook the joy aspect of a goal. If the journey, or the doing, isn’t fun and enjoyable, then maybe there’s a need to re-think the goal.
Thanks for once again sharing such great advice…have a fantastic weekend!

Tisha:
Thank you for the comment. I really liked what you said about doing the inner and the outer work that is necessary. It is so true that you can never overlooking focusing on doing the inner work because without that, it just doesn’t matter how much outside work you do. I also agree that you may need to rethink what you are pursuing if there is just no joy or pleasure in it. For your creativity to really be expressed in the greatest ways possible, you have to be pursuing something you are genuinely passionate about. Thanks for the great comment and you have a fantastic weekend too. Sibyl

Great post Sibyl,

The needles thought cycle is an important point to remember. I would also add preparation to the list. I think the more prepared you are to perform, the more confident you which limits thoughts of doubt. Nervousness becomes excitement and worry become readiness. Its helped me whenever I need to perform at my best.

Ralph: Thanks for the comment. Great addition. I 100% agree that preparation can definitely eliminate any anxiousness or nervousness. When you know you have put the time in, it just makes it much easier to perform. Thank you again for the comment. Have a great weekend.
