10 Life Lessons Everyone Should Know

The world is filled with information.  No matter which direction you look, there is information all around you available for you to absorb.  School, books, television, work, the internet, etc… We are surrounded by all types of information.

From the time we are young, we are taught the importance of consuming and learning as much of this information as possible.  It starts from an early age and continues throughout the span of our lifetime.  A large amount of our time is dedicated to being exposed to and learning as much information as we can. We are expected to learn information in order to live successfully and accomplish things in the world … to educate ourselves, gain a degree, do well in our jobs and career, etc.  The list goes on and on.

And, while absorbing information is by no means a bad thing, our lives should not just be about learning and retaining information.  We need to understand the alternaview.

Learning Life Lessons for Personal Growth: The alternaview

While it is definitely a good thing to learn and absorb the information we are expected to, we should never overlook the importance of identifying and understanding universal truths.

Although it is good to understand geometry and physics, to understand the science behind gravity and to have a strong command of language and grammar … universal truths about life are actually more important than any of the information we will ever learn. As a result, a large part of our focus should be devoted to living and learning those life lessons that are timeless that can significantly impact just about anything we do.

We must make certain that a large part of our attention is focused on learning these truths. In order to learn these life lessons we have to live and experience those things that life offers usWe have to manage through challenges and issues, taste success, understand defeat, and take notes along the way of the universal truths that can be distilled from such experiences.

And, while really understanding and learning these truths requires much more than just reading and studying them,  sometimes by seeing them we are reminded of experiences and life lessons we may have overlooked.

While these are by all means not all the universal truths that exist, here are 10 really important life lessons that I have discovered:

10 Life Lessons and Universal Truths

1. “The more you give, the more you receive” is a universal truth that applies to way more than charitable giving.  It literally applies to everything.  It has been described as the boomerang effect and that term is very fitting because you literally get back everything you put out there.  It doesn’t matter if it is kindness, generosity, love, anger, frustration, money, etc.  It all comes right back to you.

2. Life always puts in front of you exactly what you need at that precise moment in time. Whether it is good or bad or tastes sweet or sour, life gives you exactly what you need, even if you may prefer to have something else.

3. If you really believe that everything happens for a reason and buy into that truth, there is nothing you will not be able to manage through.

4. If at first you don’t succeed, there is a reason why and until you figure out that reason, you will not succeed.

5. If you struggle with a situation, but never learn the underlying lesson, it will come back to you again and again until you learn it … even though it may come in a different size box with a different color ribbon.

6. There is nothing better than figuring out your purpose and living aligned with it.

7. We have the ability to create and shape our own future. We just have to realize that is the case and then choose to do something about it.

8. If you think your life is just okay, then you still have more to learn about how you really should be living and experiencing life.

9. When you first set out to accomplish something big, at first it will be all about successfully accomplishing your desire. However, as you get closer and closer to accomplishing it and when you are finally successful, the destination and your success will not seem nearly as important as it did in the beginning.  What will really matter is what you have learned along the way and how you have grown.

10.  Things can seem to be a certain way and when we look at them on their surface, we will only understand a certain aspect. However, if we push ourselves to look at what seemed obvious and choose to look at it differently, we will see alternaviews.  We will see life lessons in everything around us that apply to who we are and who we want to be become.  We will look at things in a different way and see answers we initially overlooked.  We will see that everything has the ability to be an alternaview and point us in the direction of our own truth. We just have to look.

… that is the alternaview.

Do you have any universal truths to add to the list?  Do you agree with this alternaview?  Please share your thoughts in the comment section.

Believing everything happens for a reason really works for me. It relieves me of having to ask, ‘why?’ and trying to find a hidden or a grand purpose for everything. I can simply know that things are exactly as they are supposed to be and go on from there. Definitely a lot less stressful than when I thought I needed an answer for everything that happened!

Jean: Welcome to the alternaview. Thanks for the comment. Really believing that everything happens for a reason is one of the most important universal truths and I couldn’t agree more that it eliminates the need to ask any further questions. It is such a great feeling to find your way to this truth because then you know for certain that everything is playing out just as it should and it really does increase your ability to accept anything and everything that happens. Thanks again for the great comment. I really appreciate it.

Very true points, Sibyl! Especially I like the 7th – we really create our own future and everything depends ony on us, the important thing here is that we need to realize that this or that is our chance and then use it.

Thanks for sharing this interesting and helpful post!

Roman: Thanks for the comment. I think #7 is one of the ones I appreciate the most because it is empowering to know that we can really create our own future. And, as you said, it is all about taking advantage of that ability. This is something I continually remind myself so that I can always ensure I am positively creating and shaping my future. Thanks again for the comment. I am glad you enjoyed it.

I like the 9th point best When you first set out to accomplish something big, at first it will be all about successfully accomplishing your desire. What will really matter is what you have learned along the way and how you have grown.

Its like saying “Life is not a destination, but a journey” Gr8 post Sibyl! Universal truths laid down so simply and yet so profound!

Heena: Thanks for the comment. That universal truth is most certainly based on what you said about life not being a destination, but really a journey. I have really noticed this truth and it has come to life for me. I have always been a goal setter and have always sought out to successfully accomplish things. I realized though what this truth was all about one day when I looked up and had accomplished my goal, but was more content with what I had learned and how I had grown. I am sure you probably have also seen that reality played out as well. Thanks again for the comment. It is always great to hear from you.

Ummm….. WOW Sibyl. Look at you quietly blogging away and coming up with this sort of brilliance! I kept cut and pasting the alternaviews to comment on but they were all so good that I gave up and copied them all to my HDD. I especially love the one about life putting in front of you what you need at that time. At first I never saw it but then my favorite quote of all time “Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change” made me realise I was looking at life the wrong way. Soon as I changed the way I looked at things, everything I needed was right there.
OK fine I just have to comment on another – no. 4! Gold right there. Too many preach about trying, and trying again, but if you do the same thing over and over and expect a different result, is that not insanity by definition?!
Thanks for a refreshing read and I’m really glad you visited me so I could follow you back and discover this!

(Can you install the TweetMeMe plug in so that I can Tweet this amazing post please?!?)

Alex: Welcome to the alternaview. Thank you so much for the kind words and the great comment. I am really glad you enjoyed it. I actually had a great experience on your blog as well and really liked what you have done with it. Changing the way you look at things and seeing that it literally impacts the things you look at is a powerful universal truth isn’t it. I too had a similar experience like the one you described and I know that everything has changed and my changed perspective was the catalyst. It is good to see that universal truth at work in your life too. In terms of the Tweet Me, I think that should be appearing at the end of the post in the box. I need to check it out though. Thanks for wanting to tweet this post. I really appreciate it and am also glad I came across your blog.

There is so much wisdom here, Sibyl! Every single point is right on.

I especially like #5: if you struggle with a situation and don’t learn the lesson, it will keep coming back. This is avoided if we follow #2 and #3: life puts in front of you what you need and things happen for a reason (to learn from them).

Life is so generous. We get exactly what we need to wake up from our struggles. Our job is to pay attention, listen, and be willing to face everything.

Thanks for a very useful post that everyone can apply in their lives.

Hi Sibyl,

I especially find truth number three impressive, it helps us embrace the present moments and understand the preceding lessons. It helps us understand that we have lived on purpose every step of the way.

I really liked the way you put that and the connection you made to the universal truth that everything really does happen for a reason. I think anything that points us in the direction of that insight really helps us as we move through life and encounter challenges and issues. Thanks again for the comment.

Hey, Sibyl!

Great post! There are so many thoughts going thru my mind, it’s hard to pick out just one. :)

One of the greatest truths for me is that, after I finally do learn the lesson I’m supposed to, the path to my next lesson is always placed before me. All I have to do is look for it.

Sibyl,
This was a terrific post. At the moment, I cannot think of a single Universal lesson you might have left out.
I do think that if we don’t hear the Universe advising us to correct our course the message becomes more urgent and more blatantly communicated. We need to pay attention to those small taps before they become big kicks in the backside!

Thank you so much for this excellent article.

Great list, Sibyl.
Here’s one that I live by: If your intuition (or your gut feel0 tells you NOT to trust someone, LISTEN to it and find explanations later. :) ! It may be more on the negative side but it’s definitely one I live by. Some truths just can’t be explained……
Thank you for your lovely alternative view on things.

Farnoosh: I really like that one and it has definitely held true for me. Sometimes your gut will just tell you things about people and lead you in the right direction. The key is that you have to learn to listen and follow your instincts. Thanks for the comment and the kind words. It is great to have you commenting here.

What a great article…

A person who knows only one of these universal truths, has reached quite the level of growth and development.

Allow me to say something about three of them. They are close to me at the moment.

1. “The more you give, the more you receive” — Life is a process of constant circulation of energy. Friends, finance, knowledge, beliefs … All circulates. When we give the energy, the universe somehow returned it to us in one form or another. I tried a few times.

2. “Life always puts in front of you exactly what you need at that precise moment in time.” — When I look for a job, I have not got the job in a couple of attempts, and I complained about it. Тhese efforts seem like failures. Then I got 10 times better job. Nothing is final, good or bad. Everything is as it should be.

3. “We have the ability to create and shape our own future. ” — Not only the ability but also an obligation. It’s all in understanding how much choice we really have. Everyone has control. We just need to be aware of it.

Sibyl June 17, 2010 at 7:09 pm

Marko: Thank you so much for the great comment. I really liked what you said about constant circulation. I think that is an excellent way to describe that universal truth and it really drives home the point about how everything flourishes when things are constantly circulated. And, I couldn’t agree more with you that it really is our responsibility to create and shape our own future. Thanks again for the comment. I really appreciate it.

#5 Just keeps ringing in my ears. It seems that life has a strange way of “testing” you on the lessons you learn. If you fail the test I can definately say you will see the material again. The problem that most people have when they get to a “test” is that they have been studing out of the wrong book. I seem to get frustrated with my circumstances and forget to take notes and prepare myself for the review. I have enjoyed reading through the material available on this site. Thank you for being an excellent resource and inspiration.

Frank: Thank you so much for the comment and the kind words. I am so glad that you have enjoyed reading the material on this site. It really means a lot to me to hear that, so thank you. I will admit that lesson #5 came to me later because there were so many times when I missed that underlying lesson and didn’t think twice about it. However, it really is true that life is like a curriculum of lessons and in order to really progress, you have to learn each lesson and move on to the next one. Thank you again for the comment. It is great to have you here at the alternaview.

Martin June 17, 2010 at 2:25 am

Hi Sibyl,
I enjoyed reading the rules you live your life by. If this were my list I would have put No.6 at No.1 “There is nothing better than figuring out your purpose and living aligned with it.” Finding a meaning in life makes everything worth while, it even helps you get through the tough times.
But my favourite was No.2 5. If you struggle with a situation, but never learn the underlying lesson, it will come back to you again and again until you learn it, because this will become my new way of looking at difficulties.

Thanks Martin.

Reply

Sibyl June 17, 2010 at 7:19 pm

Martin: Thanks for the comment and I so agree that figuring out your purpose and living according to it should definitely be at the top of the list (Why didn’t I think of that :) ) You are so right about that point because if you are really living according to your purpose, everything else unfolds just as it should. And, in many ways, these truths are inherently followed if you are really living out your purpose in the right way. In terms of lessons coming back, I was actually just commenting with Frank about how this letter came to me later in life. There were so many times when I missed the underlying lessons and in retrospects, so many lessons I had to repeat. However, once you realize that there are underlying lessons, you look for them and are much less apt to miss them. Thank you again for the comment. I really appreciate it.

Hi Sibyl,

I really miss reading your posts. I shouldn’t stay gone so long :( I love all of your tips here. Tip # 5 struck a great chord with me. It reminds me to always learn the underlying lesson in everything. It speaks a great message for those who’ve had a troubled past. For instance I always say that “Organization is more than just a clean room, it’s a frame of mind.” In other words, if someone has trouble staying organized, they can go out of their way to clean up their work area around them and make it spic n span. But chances are at some point in time they will convert back to the old habit of disorganization. They have to find that root cause deep in their mind that causes them to fall prey to disorganization.

Debbie: Welcome to the alternaview. Thank you so much for the comment. I definitely think #5 is one of the most important lessons. It is interesting though because it can be a little disconcerting to really believe this and know it is true. It means that when lessons do reappear we most likely have not learned all we can and sometimes that is challenging to admit. Thank you so much for the comment and stopping by the alternaview. Hi Sibyl,

I really love the first one. Giving is its own reward when done as an altruistic act. Yet, giving is less rewarding if one only gives and seldom allows oneself to receive. Giving and Receiving are the same side of the coin. An expansive mind-set and a willingness to look beyond reward is the benefit of giving and receiving. One can not fully appreciate the act of giving, unless one fully appreciates the act of receiving. One can not fully appreciate the act of receiving, unless one fully appreciates the act of giving.

One universal truth is that most things we are taught are wrong. Consider this common saying: “God grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change; courage to change the things we can, and wisdom to know the difference.” On the surface this sounds nice, but if you think about it for a while you will see it is a rationalization saying it is OK to quit, to give up, because it must be something you cannot change. The only way to fail is to quit and we would not have had the thought to do something if we couldn’t do it in time.

Sybil, These are great. My favorites are number 4 and number 9. Number 4 isn’t what you are expecting it to be when you read it. It gives you an “ohhhhh – yes, that is so true” moment. Number 9 should be learned by everyone – it’s not the goals or accomplishments but who we become in the process. Great job. Blessings, Amy

Thank you also for the comment and I am glad you enjoyed the post. As you mentioned, it really is all about who you become more than it is about the actual accomplishment. Once we realize that, we really set ourselves up for everything to fall into place.
