How to Really Get What You Want

If you have been pursuing a goal for some time and working really hard at something, do you expect to see some signs of success?  Does there have to be some evidence that things are falling into place before you believe in something coming to fruition?  Do you need to see progress and proof that what you want and desire is becoming a reality?

For many of us, little signs of success are a prerequisite to a belief that what we are pursuing is coming true. It can be challenging to be absolutely certain right after you set a goal that you will by all means reach it.  We may feel totally motivated to work at something and filled with confidence, but somewhere in the back of our minds there may be some doubts that linger … especially if we have set a big long term goal.

Attaining what we want is a process, but as we get closer and closer to success, our doubts and uncertainty start diminishing and ultimately disappear. We have to be able to see what we want slowly coming true and once we see those signs, we are then propelled toward success.

Whether or not we realize it, many of us have fallen into the trap and adopted the approach “I will believe it when I can see it”.

However, this approach of “I will believe it when I can see it” can actually hold us back.  As there usually is, there is an alternaview we should try to adopt instead.

Self Motivation: Belief Should Come First – The alternaview

Instead of buying into the approach of “I will believe it when I can see it”, we would be so much better off if we could adopt different thinking and understand that in order to see it, we have to first believe it. When it comes to accomplishing anything, belief has got to come first.  We have to actually believe we can have something and once we can convince ourselves that it is possible, that is when we will see what we want come to fruition.

It is all about really believing you can and should have what you desire.

As a result, the best thing we can do is to chip away at limiting beliefs or thoughts that are standing in our way of believing that we can achieve something. Instead of requiring signs that something is coming to fruition, we should instead focus our energy on making sure that we believe.  That we believe in what we are pursuing and that we believe we are more than capable of attaining it.

I am sure you have heard this advice and recommendation expressed before:

“You Will See It, When You Believe It.”   Wayne Dyer

“Your belief determines your action and your action determines your results, but first you have to believe.”     Mark Victor Hansen

“Some things have to be believed to be seen.”   Ralph Hodgson

These are all expressions of the same truth and once we really understand and subscribe to this thinking, we will really be able to see our desires manifesting.  We will be less likely to be held back by limiting beliefs and we will no longer require proof that we can have what we want.  We will increase our confidence in our ability to achieve whatever it is we desire and we will set ourselves up to continually be able to do so.

How to use this alternaview:

1. Look really closely. It may be challenging to see the beliefs that are holding you back.  You may have always been a confident person and have had a life filled with accomplishments and success.  However, even if this is the case, it is possible that somewhere deep down inside, you are holding limiting beliefs about what you can actually accomplish.  Be on the lookout for them because they can be subtle.

2. Be willing to chip away at limiting beliefs. Getting rid of limiting beliefs is usually a process.  There is not a magical solution that allows you to completely rid yourself of them instantly.  As you are working through eliminating them, you may feel you have been successful, but then time will pass, another challenge will arise, and you will see your limiting belief return.  Know that you have to continually work at getting rid of limiting beliefs until they disappear permanently.

3. Play up your confidence. Even if you aren’t 100% confident in the beginning that you can accomplish something, keep pushing yourself to understand and accept the reality that you can have what you desire.  It is necessary to do some reprogramming and playing up your confidence is a good way to begin that reprogramming.

4. Reflect on Your Success. Think about all those things you have accomplished and reflect on how you felt about them just before they came true.  Remember that feeling of confidence you had that your dream was finally coming true.  You genuinely believed you had done everything you could and that you had earned your right to success. This is the same feeling that you should be shooting for anytime you set a goal.

5. Believe in the process. You have to be confident that as long as you genuinely follow the process, it will indeed work for you.  Know that you really can create your own reality and get what you want … you just need to believe in the process and learn how to integrate it into your life.

Conclusion

Don’t allow yourself to be held back by limiting beliefs.  Don’t require certain things to happen and appear before you believe you are capable of attaining what you want.  It is time to let go of any notions of “I will believe it when I see it”.  Flip it all around and know that as long as you believe in what you are going after and believe you are capable of having it, then it will become your reality … that is the alternaview.

Nice article Sibyl.

You have touched on the heart of the matter here. the whole Law of Attraction thing stands on it. The whole range of personal development spectrum includes this basic and the most important shift in human awareness.

Thanks for reminding us yet again. :)

Abubakar: Thank you so much for the comment and stopping by the alternaview. This type of thinking is definitely consistent with the Law of Attraction and I think once we are all able to really ensure we are not holding on to limiting beliefs, we can really start shaping and creating our own reality and future. Thanks again for the comment. I really appreciate hearing your thoughts and insights.

Hey Sibyl,

I am very familiar with people who need to see things before they can believe them. They are very facts based. However, if we would all think that way, nothing new would ever be created, because, well… because it doesn’t have a corespondent in reality yet. So I think this is faulty thinking. Sometimes we need to take a leap of faith to get success.

Eduard: Thanks for the comment and stopping by the alternaview. I couldn’t agree more with you that sometimes we really do need to take a leap of faith to get success … even if that leap is a quantum leap. Once we really understand and believe in this approach it is much easier to make certain that we are always working for ourselves instead of against ourselves. Thanks again for the comment.

Hi Sybil,
Great post. I’m truly a proponent of believing it first and knowing I’ll see it later.
Limiting beliefs will always win out if we don’t change our programming.

Thank you!

Angela: Thanks so much for the comment. I really appreciate it. I am glad to hear that you agree and are a proponent of believing it first. I think it really is one of the most important traits we can have. Once we are able to consistently believe in what we desire and know we are capable of having it, we set ourselves up for continued success and life unfolding in so many amazing ways. Sybil, this is so true yet so easy to forget sometimes. When our belief in something is strong, it feels like an inner force propels us into action and guides our steps. As long as we keep our focus on the process and put our energies there, we will continue to move in the desired direction without stress and strain.

Jean: Hey. How are you doing? Always so good to hear from you. Thanks so much for the comment. Isn’t it so true that we can easily forget this reality sometime and the extreme importance of always believing in ourselves and what we are trying to accomplish. I agree with what you said about focusing on the process and putting energies there. When you are able to successfully do that, things really do unfold as they should. Thanks again for the comment.

Sibyl,

First of all, congratulations on getting onto the “All-time Top 10 Commentators” list on my blog. You’ve just been awarded a do-follow link from my site to yours! Wondering what I’m talking about? Check out my blog.

I’m sure you didn’t see it coming, did you? I guess you would have just believed, before you actually saw, that you’d be getting links from various places. And there’s one right there from my site :-)

“In order to see it, we have to first believe it”. As Abubakar also mentioned, the Law of Attraction is based on these principles. It’s about envisioning and then believing……………….. not that you will get it, but………………….. that you already have it!

Success always,
Mark

Sibyl!
Nicely done!

I think at the core people want to believe and grow and change but this world can beat that desire out of us. As I read your article, I kept thinking about the book/movie The Polar Express. The child in the book/movie wanted to believe so badly yet he could not hear the bell ring. It wasn’t until he experienced something extraordinary that he was finally able to hear the bell ring and thus marked his new belief.

Some people can’t hear the bell no matter how hard they try. It takes actions of faith (like the 5 steps you mentioned) that you can and will believe to birth the belief.

Keep up the good stuff!

Ryan: Thanks so much for the great comment and comparison. I think the example you gave was right on point and really drives home the need to believe in order to achieve your desired result. It is also true that some people can’t hear the bell not matter how hard they try, but hopefully with continual practice and dedication at some point in their life they will be able to really believe. Thanks again for the comment. I really appreciate it and it is great to have you stopping by the alternaview.

Great article Sibyl. Many great people in the past have used what you mentioned here to achieve what they wanted before they had it. I think most people do have the mentality that they have to see something first before they have it, and so if they never see it, they will never have it. Visualization plays such an important role in success and getting over limiting beliefs. I like how you remind us that it is really possible to get the things we want in life but we have to believe in it first. Thank you.

Hulbert: Thanks so much for the comment. It really is true that it is difficult for many people to believe something before they see it. However, as you mentioned, the only way to ever achieve something is to believe you can and should have it. It is interesting because many of the people that you have interviewed on your blog seem to be great at believing before they see something and working at it. I am sure that is why they all have experienced such great and continued success. Thanks again for the comment and stopping by the alternaview. I really appreciate it.

Sybil,

This is really well explained and detailed article. I think many times, I start a task and it actually gets messier or complex just before it starts to look better. Many of us want to quit the task at messy period and we are not seeing the result or just the opposite result than we wanted.

For example, my blogging was like that, earlier days I was writing and talking to myself, I felt I was churning out good posts that no one knew about it. It was disheartening to say the least. While, I still feel I have a long way to go, bent in road is ahead and I can see it.

Thanks and now I am a new subscriber. Thanks for stopping by at my blog as well.

I 100% agree with you that when you start out at something it can feel “messy”, but as you continue, things start clearing up and you can really start making progress. As you mentioned, it is so important to not be discouraged during those times when you are in the beginning and still trying to figure things out your path to success. It is all about having the confidence that if you continue to devote the necessary attention, focus and effort, you will eventually get what you want. By the way, I am a fan of your blog as well and am also a subscriber. It is great to get to know you. Thanks again for the comment and stopping by the alternaview.

Hello sibyl,
How are you?
Thanks for sharing this.
i believe self motivation drives our purpose, passion and enhances persistence.my take home thought for the day is ‘you really can create your own reality and get what you want … you just need to believe in the process and learn how to integrate it into your life’.This a profound statement with the keyword being ‘process’.
It takes time to overcome our limiting beliefs but that’s were self motivation kicks in.

I am quite amazed by this article Sibyl…

Here’s how I see it:

Situation – A

For example, you are not feeling the best. You feel tired, exhausted, your head hurts. But you refuse to see a doctor. If you do not go to visit the doctor, you will not have to face the fact that you are sick. You are afraid of reality… So, you “believe” that everything is fine. Tell yourself that it’s no big deal, that you’ll wait for something that really hurt…

Let’s take a look the situation B

You are not feeling the best. You feel tired, exhausted, your head hurts. However, you “believe” that your condition may become worse. You visualize the images of pain that could happen. And you immediately go to the doctor.

In both situations, the symptoms are the same. However, beliefs are different. As a result, the behavior is different.

If you want a certain outcome, select and accept a certain belief. In the case A, we believe that everything will be fine, while in case B we believe that it will be worse. So we choose different actions.

Beliefs can change things. It is my opinion.

You took an excellent approach to the subject Sibyl… Continue the good work, I like your site. I think I’ll visit Alternaview more often. :)

HI Sibyl. I agree that changing your beliefs is a process. And it is a process that is not to be underestimated and takes a lot of rigor and paying attention to. Also choosing your mentors who can assist you with what to change your beliefs into, is important.
It is tricky as most of our beliefs are invisible and yet they are creating our lives. It is great to point all this out and I love your alternaviews.
