30 Things I Wish I Knew Earlier in Life

Are you living today better than you did yesterday?

This is one of my favorite questions and one we should ask ourselves from time to time.  It allows us to really pinpoint what is working and what is not, what life lessons we have learned, what progress we have made, and what more we need to learn.

We are all aware that life is a journey and our goal should be to take as many steps as we can in the right direction.

To know that despite the fact that we may make mistakes along the way, when we look back on where we have been, we will be able to see just how far we have come.  Our views and beliefs are more developed, our understanding of our purpose is becoming clearer, and overall we are just living today in a better way than we did yesterday.

We are learning from the life lessons that have come our way.

Those life lessons and who we are come to us in the perfect order and at the perfect time. There really is no questioning that reality.

However, how much easier would it have been if you knew back then what you know now?  And, since life is all about living and learning from ourselves and from each other, why not create a list of life lessons and share it with the world? It really can be helpful to take a look at other people’s list and see what they wish they had known earlier in life.  Maybe there are some good insights and information you can use to make certain you are always living today better than you did yesterday.

And while this list is by no means exhaustive, here are 30 things that I think would have been great to know earlier on in life (in no particular order):

  1. The only difference between a rainy Monday and a sunny Monday is my perspective.
  2. Setting goals doesn’t end … they should just get bigger and better.
  3. It’s okay to not know.
  4. You can break a bad habit by falling in love with its opposite.
  5. If you ask yourself questions and are patient, the answers will always come.
  6. Be happy walking until you can run … and then it is time to try to fly.
  7. It is unnecessary to prove to other people that you are right.
  8. You should either be living your purpose or working to figure out what it is.
  9. Apple’s stock price is going to continue to increase for a very long time.
  10. There is no way around it … you have to do some sort of exercise.
  11. Life is not a competition.
  12. I Live. I Learn. I Am.
  13. Keeping things simple is always the way.
  14. There is nothing to fear.
  15. Common sense will take you where you need to go.
  16. There are so many benefits that stem from being nice to people.
  17. You can push yourself too much and too hard.
  18. There are usually subtle limiting beliefs that hold you back.
  19. You can shape and create your own reality.
  20. Reading is a great thing.
  21. Everything changes.
  22. Baby steps are great, but there is nothing better than a quantum leap.
  23. There is good in everyone, you just have to be willing to see it.
  24. Silence really is golden.
  25. Once you find your purpose, you will know you are not mistaken.
  26. We are all meant to tap into our own creativity … whatever that may mean for us.
  27. You are your best adviser.
  28. If you look at things from the right perspective, they will always point to at least one truth.
  29. The best growth comes when you are out of your comfort zone.
  30. There is nothing better than really living and experiencing life.
Live Today Better than Yesterday

This post topic was actually suggested to me by Abubakar.  Abubakar is inviting all of us to share the things we wish we had known earlier in life. It really is a great exercise.  Give it a try if you have some time.

Sibyl this is a great post. I would add a few from my own list.

I don’t have to believe everything I think.

What I say and how I say it is important – words have great power both positive and negative.

I can do whatever I want, if my desire is strong enough.

and the big one,

The only time there is, is right now. The past is past and the future has not arrived.

Thank you!

Percival J. Meris June 29, 2010 at 11:56 pm

All of us can claim that there are things in life that we wished we knew earlier. Well, that’s what life is. Life is a series of lessons to learn. What is important is that we do not fall into feelings of regrets for not knowing those things earlier. Be happy that there are those things, because they teach us lessons and make us better persons now.

Now we can say that those things existed, but no longer now. This means that we have become better persons because of the lessons of those things. Let me warn you: there will be a lot more of these things to come.

Life is a continuous learning event. Opportunities for learning will always come whether you like it or not. You can only choose between two things: learn them or not. If you don’t learn them, if you will continue to suffer the effects of not learning them.

Experiences, especially the unpleasant ones, are the teachers. They will always come. After you have learned one lesson, don’t think it is the end of it. There will be other BIGGER lessons to learn, and even MUCH BIGGER ones after that.

Percival: Thank you so much and I totally agree. Life is all about living and learning and not regretting any experiences, but rather realizing each one was what you needed at the exact moment you experienced it. I also agree that sometimes the most challenging experiences provide us with the most opportunity for growth. Thank you so much for the comment. I really appreciate it.

Hi Sibyl,

That’s a great list and I agree with many of the points while I didn’t think of the others before, so thank you for the eye opening.

From my own experience I could add:

-Planning an exact future is futile…quick reactions at steering are more important
-Dreams are not to be accomplished but just a general idea which direction to go – that’s living your dreams.
-If you can stop at any time and honestly say : “life is good” then you are in the right track

I really thought what you said about being able to stop at anytime and say “life is good” is an amazing statement. That really is what it is all about. Finding your way to that place where you are continually in touch with all the great things life offers. Thanks again for the comment. I really appreciate it.

Great list you have compiled Sibyl and I appreciate the work that went into that, so thankyou.
For me I would add something my Mum used to say to me all the time and I hated it because it was so true but now that I am older and wiser it is such a pearl of wisdom.
“you always have a choice – and that’s your attitude”
I think it kind of sums up a lot of those you listed in that once you realise the answers come from simply changing perspective, then it changes your mindsight toward everything.
Thanks for the list

Alex: Thanks so much for the comment and that is a great pearl of wisdom from your mom. You really do always have a choice and that perfectly sums up so much of the list and is probably one of the greatest lessons to understand. Once you realize the choice is yours and the real power that goes along with the statement, it really does open you up to experience life in the greatest ways. Thanks so much for the comment.

Excellent list Sibyl! I love numbers 7 & 23.

I wish I’d known #9 and doen soemthing about it 10 years ago – but alas we all make mistakes…

May I be bold enough and add a bit to the end of #12. “I learn some more.” My mom always says to me – you learn until you die – it’s the only wway to stay alive (meaning menatally and physically).

And also – I’d like to add these:

- Listen to some of the things your parents tell you. (difficult to know which things – but still worth listening)
- Do one thing a day that is just for your happiness.
- Don’t agonise about the past.
- Resolve internal conflicts or you’ll always be unhappy in life. This one is from Tony Robbins’ – Unleash the Power Within Seminar.
- There are always two clear choices to ANY dillema in life: you either choose to DO; or you cn choose NOT TO DO. The rest is a bonus…

I like this a lot, I read similar guest post Abubakar’s 5 things and Rob’s post on making mistakes and I have been thinking about what have I learned since I am growing up and mistakes I made. I made many and I am making a few right now, only thing is I am not aware of it.

I am slowly correcting my path and learning along the way. I like the way you said, life is not a competition, it is okay not to know and everything changes, that is a huge awareness for me. Thank you for providing your alternative views here.

The one I like here is it’s okay not to know. I wish I knew this a lot sooner because I was always a person who was always hung up on needing to know. Hey Sybil, excellent list…

Since about every point I can write a lot, I look to the one that is most attractive to me — “21. Everything changes.”

It is a thing which I wish that I knew many years ago… The moment when I realized that everything is transient, variable and impermanent, my life has moved to a new level. My mind became calmer, I could at the same time to enjoy things without having to expect that they will be eternal…

This “knowledge” no matter how logical and clear it is, introduced my consciousness to a new level of growth…

I’m glad that Abubakar gave you this idea, because I learned your values and I respect them…

I really like your explanation and hearing about your experience with “everything changes”. What you said really resonated with me because I think once we truly accept that everything changes, we do open our lives up to move to a new level. It is all about being open to things changing and not being attached to things remaining the same for no real reason. I know Abubakar would love for you to put together your own list. I really do recommend it. It is a great exercise and a reflection on all that you have learned. Thanks again for the comment and always stopping by the alternaview. I really appreciate it.

All of these lessons are great Sibyl! It inspires me to write my own list and share it with my kids when they get older. One thing I’ve learned though is that there is so much advice you can gain from others as well as the lessons they’ve learned in their life but what it really comes down to is experiencing your own life lessons as everyone is unique and will go through their own ups and downs. Our experiences makes us who we are and had I not gotten through certain challenges in my life I would’ve never learned. Thanks for sharing your list!
