Do the Small Things Well and Achieve Big Goals

We all have dreams. There are amazing things we want to accomplish and so we arrange our lives in such a way to position ourselves to accomplish these big goals.

This usually means we have to continually work toward our long term goals and take a series of small steps until we have prepared and are ready to take a quantum leap.

The days go by and we take small step after small step in the right direction. Although we may not have had anything happen that in our minds constitutes a quantum leap, we can see the smaller signs of progress.

But … we want to see more results from all of our hard work. Taking small steps is great, but we want so much more. We are ready to make some significant strides forward.

And, this is where some resentment, perhaps only a small amount, can set in.

We may not even realize it, but there may be a part of us that really just wants to accomplish our goal and achieve the success we have been looking for. Yes, it is great to allow things to evolve and happen at their own pace, but there is also a side of us that is ready to be successful at whatever it is we are working toward. This can cause us to fall into the trap of not being satisfied with taking just small steps forward. Smaller steps are great and all but, we want that quantum leap we have been working so hard for.

Reaching Goals: The alternaview

Whenever you are working toward accomplishing anything, you have to be happy taking the small steps. You need to be proud and appreciate every small step you take because that is really how you set yourself up to accomplish what you want.

Why?

Because how you take the small steps really matters.

The more energy and passion you are able to put into each small step, the better. And, you can really be inspired to give everything you can to the small steps when you appreciate the importance of each and everyone you take.

Every step you take is important and when you are able to do even the small things well with the utmost quality, it is amazing how much progress you can really make. This is why it is necessary to find our way to the best perspective that will allow us to appreciate every single thing we are doing and ensure we are doing it in a great way.

Your mindset can’t just be one of “getting things done” or quantity over quality. It doesn’t matter how much you get done if you don’t do it in a high quality way. It just means you will have more steps added on to your journey because when it comes to reaching goals, there have to be a certain number of high quality small steps taken. That is just the way it works.

So, you are much better off doing each small step in a great way and appreciating each small step you take.

How to use this alternaview:

1. Small steps are essential. Realize that small steps are an essential part of the process and appreciate each and every one. There is nothing that is too small. Every step requires and deserves all of your focus and attention.

2. Give Yourself the credit you deserve. No progress is too small or inconsequential. Appreciate all of the progress you are making and all the small steps you are continually taking. Granted they may not all be quantum leaps, but they are an important part of your journey that needs to be recognized.

3. Slow down. When you are working toward reaching a goal, it is not about how quickly you move that matters, but whether or not you do things that are actually positively moving you forward. Don’t just do things quickly so you can cross them off your list. Pour all of your passion into doing things really well with the utmost attention no matter how long it may take.

4. Perspective and good energy matter. Make certain you are always bringing the most positive perspective and energy to what you are doing. Enjoy working and taking the small steps.

5. Don’t Focus on the Big Steps. Don’t worry about when the quantum leaps will happen. Just be where you are and take the small steps you can each and everyday. Be content and happy to take small step after small step. The quantum leaps will come. They always do, but you can’t obsess over them.

Conclusion

Those things that we are working toward are accomplished by taking a series of small steps in the right direction. Yes, we will take big steps from time to time, but there is nothing more important than being able to maintain patience, motivation and confidence as we take the small ones. That is really how you set yourself up to accomplish anything you desire … that is the alternaview.

Do you agree with this alternaview? Are you good at taking the small steps?  Please share your thoughts in the comment section.

Thanks for the comment Roman. It really is all about the small steps isn’t it? The concept is so easy, but it is also easy to overlook and understand that how we do the small things really will determine the success we realize. I am glad that you enjoyed the post and thanks again for the comment.

Hey Rocky: It really is all about being able to appreciate the little steps and as you mentioned, it ties directly into motivating us to continue. Once we find our way to be continually inspired and motivated to take the small steps, there is no way we will not set ourselves up for the bigger ones. Thanks for the comment. Much appreciated.

Great post, Sybil. It’s common to get too caught up in the fact that the end-goal hasn’t been reached. But the path on the way to each goal is this little thing called life. It’s all the in-between stuff. I love what you said about appreciating every small step. That is the way to happiness–the only way to truly live. You rock Sybil!

Nea: You rock too :) ! I really liked how you put it … “it’s all the in-between stuff”. That is so true. It is all about learning how to manage your way positively through all the in-between stuff. Each step on the journey is an important one and we can really make great strides when we take those smaller ones with the utmost attention and focus. It is all about what you put into the small steps. Thanks so much for the comment and the additional insights.

My life’s gone a lot more smoothly since I’ve gone the route of focusing on small steps. Looking at the big picture can freak me out, so I try not to do that :)

Jean: Thanks for the comment. I think that is even more reason to not get too caught up and buy into the stories that your mind can feed you about the big steps … you never want to freak yourself out :) I really agree with your approach to just focus on the small steps … one at a time. Thanks for the comment.

I have heard that good things come to them that wait but I have found that I lack the patience to wait for the good things. We live in a microwave society meaning we want what we want when we want it. It is difficult sometimes for me to focus on the small steps because I long so desperately for the final reward. If I appropriately use this alternaview I will learn to celebrate each and every step that brings me closer instead of complaining about how long the journey is. Thanks for this Sibyl it was right on time.

Frank: Thanks for the comment and the real world example. I think many of us are familiar with exactly what you described and the desire to realize success sooner rather than later. I do think that using this alternaview will impact how we experience everything and how we manage our way to what we desire. It really is being able to do just as you said … celebrating the small steps as you move through your journey.

Once I realized that I had to give myself praise, admiration and applause for each attempt and effort, no matter how small it was, I changed my life. The changes that I experienced were amazing. My life has got the quality I never dreamed that would be…. My satisfaction level has become much higher. Simply put, I grew up.

Well, because that I think this is a great article… everyone must have patience and firmness to appreciate small steps even when you do not get great results…

There is nothing better than increasing your satisfaction level and getting the most out of life. Thank you again for the comment. I really appreciate it.

In the best traditions of this post Sibyl I’ll be short. The little things in life are the big things. A house was built one brick at a time. A life lived one moment at a time. A meal eaten one mouthful at a time. So a goal one step at a time. Bite size brilliance is life size success. Super duper post….as ever!

Hey Sibyl, baby steps all the way. I love point 2.

“No progress is too small or inconsequential. Appreciate all of the progress you are making and all the small steps you are continually taking. Granted they may not all be quantum leaps, but they are an important part of your journey that needs to be recognized.”

Just today I was sitting at a cafe and I came up with a little product idea. Nothing may come of it but the fact that I saw a problem and started thinking of solutions shows how much I’ve changed the way I think. I would never have spotted that before before because I’ve started looking at things differently, if I keep at it, law of averages it’s going to pay off sooner or later.

Hi Sibyl,

Small steps! We all have seen a small child trying to learn how to walk, yet we forget or disregard the complete attention and concentration they give to the task.

They look at their feet throughout the whole process and forget about the surrounding world, and only when they reach their short, specific goal (the opposite wall) then they look up and smile in satisfaction, pride and happiness.

Your post is a great reminder of how simple and gratifying small steps can be when we apply ourselves with our hearts. Thank you! :)

I love all the subjects you come up with here. I love reading all inspiring blogs so I do not have to feel down at all, my blog friends are here to help. This is so true when you are blogging or in real life goal to do small things and celebrate each small successes.

I really like small steps and slowing down ideas a lot. I am already in slow blogging and slow life, so my expectations are met in that aspect. One thing is to keep doing your work and do not worry about the outcome and rest will follow.

Hi Sibyl .. I have so much going on at the moment .. that I have to do small steps and just keep going .. doing as much as I can, but always ticking off a box, and then moving on to the next thing ..

I move in two weeks .. and so each little step is making a world of difference ..?!

Once this is through – then I can concentrate and move forward with my life .. and then I will accomplish the goals that are ahead ..

One step at a time .. so true – thanks Hilary

Sibyl,
You’re so right.
Small steps matter and how we do them, whether joyfully or with resentment sets the tone for the entire goal we’ve undertaken.

One foot in front of the other while on the path – we’ll get there.

thank you!

I have a Will Smith quote that out does anything i was going to say to reply to this post. Allow me to share.

“You don’t try to build a wall. You don’t set out and say ‘I’m gonna build the biggest, baddest, greatest wall that has ever been built’. You say ‘I’m going to lay this brick as perfectly as a brick can be laid’. You do this every single day, and soon you have a wall’.
- Will Smith

Great post by the way! It all about daily progress.

Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful article. I have read them over and over again today and here is my own contribution.

Small deeds done are better than great deeds planned. I believe that we should care just as much about the small things in our lives as the big things. Why? Because, If we are faithful in the small things, the big things will take care of themselves.

Helen Keller said, ” I long to accomplish a great and noble task but it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble.

Thanks for sharing Sibyl and keep up the good work of yours!..
