5 Different Perspectives (alternaviews) We Need

Jul

There are common sentiments and beliefs that many people accept at face value.  We have heard these beliefs from the time we were young expressed by our parents, our siblings and other people around us.

There is a presumption that these sentiments always hold true regardless of the situation.  As a result, we often rely on these statements and use them as guidance and confirmation we are doing the right things and making the best decisions.

Although at first glance they seem to be easy to understand and apply, it can be helpful to take a look at them from a different perspective…

The alternaview:

Common Belief #1: This too shall pass.

alternaview: When we are going through challenges, people will often remind us that things will always improve as time goes by.  Now, while this is certainly true, we should never overlook the fact that we have a role to play in terms of our outlook and perspective.  It is not just about sitting back, letting time go by and waiting for things to pass, but rather actively choosing to do all we can to have the right perspective so that we can manage through challenges.  Once we participate in the process and get ourselves in the right frame of mind, challenges really do pass on by.

Common Belief #2: Hard work will always pay off.

alternaview: It is not just about working hard.  If you don’t work to clear away limiting beliefs and other things that are holding you back, it doesn’t matter how hard you work because those limiting beliefs will always be working against you.  In order to be successful and accomplish anything, you have to remove any thoughts from your mind that you can’t do something.  It takes more than just hard work.

Common Belief #3: If at first you don’t succeed … try, try again.

alternaview: There is nothing wrong with giving something your all and continuing to work at something, but don’t overlook lessons and pointers in the right direction that are coming your way. Perhaps there is a reason for your lack of success.  Maybe you are being pointed in a different direction.  Maybe you need to try another approach.  Always keep trying if that is what you feel you should do, but look for and learn the lessons that come to you along the way.

Common Belief #4: You can’t win them all.

alternaview: When things don’t workout as planned, we may remind ourselves that we can’t win them all.  However, the reality is that no matter what the outcome, we actually are winning in one way or another, we just need to look at the situation differently.  Even though things may not have worked out as planned, understanding that everything happens for a reason allows us to see that we actually are always benefiting, even if it is not in the way we had hoped.

Common Belief#5: No pain, no gain.

alternaview: Many people believe that in order to accomplish things, they must push themselves and make some sacrifices.  However, in order to move forward and be successful, it is not actually necessary to feel any pain. Things don’t have to be tough.  There can and should be beauty in the process and we should enjoy what we are trying to do so much that we are able to pour our passion and energy into it.  When we are able to continually do this, that really is how we gain and make progress.

Conclusion

It is important to always make sure we are buying into the right things and that we have the right outlook on life and the things we are trying to accomplish.  Just because you have always been told something, doesn’t mean you should just assume and accept it to be true. Think through things and make certain that they make sense for you.  If you look and inquire, the answers will always be there … that is the alternaview.

Do you agree with these alternaviews?  What are your thoughts on the common beliefs?  Please share your comments below.

Sibyl

This is a great post. Often our thoughts and beliefs are automatic and we do take on the notions and stories of others. It can be very refreshing to stop and challenge those ideas. I think the excellent point you make is not only to challenge the belief but to take action and find an answer that will work for you.

Marion: Thanks for the comment and the stumble. I definitely appreciate both :) I do agree with you that our thoughts can be automatic and it is refreshing when we challenge our own assumptions. I do think it is all about finding your way to your own truth and answers and often times that means you can’t just accept something at face value. Thanks again for the comment and the Stumble. I really appreciate it.

Hi Sibyl,

Those points you make are very true!

We tend to follow what we have learned without questioning those concepts and many times it only work against us.

Thinking, analyzing, questioning, is just using our human brain, we should do that more often instead of just going in autopilot.

Raul: I couldn’t agree with you more … there is nothing worse than auto pilot. It is so important that we are processing information and actively making decisions about how we want to perceive situations and what actions we want to take. And, since life really is all about living and learning, we have to make certain that we are doing our part and not just taking in information that may not be true. Thanks so much for the comment. I really appreciate it.

Great post, Sybil. I definitely agree with many of your assertions.
Especially # 2…though I do believe in diligence, in order to maximize one’s efforts, it’s important to have good people skills, common sense, a sense of appropriateness and discernment.

Jennifer: Thanks for the comment and stopping back by the alternaview. It is good to see you here again. I think you are right about the importance of having good people skills, common sense and discernment. I think we really do have to be aware of how we are acting and interacting in the world. I am glad that you like the post and thanks again for the comment. Much appreciated.

Sibyl,

Wow, I believe in all these perspective, even now, My gosh. I did not know it was not the best way of thinking.

My biggest Mantra is this too shall pass, as otherwise I would not be able to pass through it. Like my 15 months (almost 16 months) keeps waking up at night when all I want to do is sleep, I keep telling myself this too shall pass when I am trying to wake myself up. of course, now I will try to think alternate view you suggested and let you know how it goes.

I was happy being ignorant… now I have some work ahead of me!

Preeti: Hey. How are you doing? I just finished reading your guest post at Arvind’s site (http://www.arvinddevalia.com/blog/2010/07/30/5-quick-ways-for-you-to-be-happy-right-now/). It was really good by the way. Thanks so much for the comment. I think a lot of us have bought into those statements and honestly, as long as they are completely being interpreted right, they definitely hold true. I think what I have noticed though is that if you don’t really give them the adequate thought they need and look at them from all angles, they can be misinterpreted and misunderstood. This too shall pass is definitely one I have always bought into as well, and once I realized that I could help things pass simply by changing and improving my perspective, they passed much easier. I am so glad that you enjoyed the post. Thanks again for the comment.

Actually, I believe in all of these as wel:l:) In fact, grew up incorporating these beliefs into my lifestyle. It’s the knowing, however, that there’s more to these little tidbits of life, lurking beneath the surface for one to survive & cope with change.

Thanks,
Clara.

Clara: Thanks for the comment and I think you said it perfectly … it is the knowing that there is more to these little tidbits of life that is important. Once we realize that there is more to them than just the surface understanding, they really can become very powerful and helpful truisms in our life. Thanks again for the comment and stopping by the atlernaview.

Hi Sibyl,
Great list! Another one is “sticks and stone will break your bones, but names will never hurt you.” The reality is that broken bones generally mend with little permanent effect (hopefully!) whereas a hurtful comment can a last for ever.

Topi: Great addition and so true. Thanks for adding it and thank you for the comment. I am glad that you enjoyed the post and you are so right that hurtful comments really can have a lasting impact if we don’t find a different perspective and a way to understand how to manage them in the most positive way. Thanks again for the comment and always stopping by the alternaview.

Perfect contrast. I like how you bridged the gap between passive/hopeful and positive action.

J.D. Thanks for the comment. I am glad that you liked the post. I think you make an important point about the difference between being passive and actively choosing to participate in how you process and manage though situations. We really do have more control than we may think at first and it is all about taking advantage of that ability.

Dear Sibyl, I am learning discernment and that is supporting to take the best of what I know and apply it differently in each situation.
In my experience no situation has a ‘one size fits all’ solution or belief. Although we have made to believe that, I now know it is up to me to observe the situation and TAKE responsibility for how to deal with it, each situation requiring a fresh approach. THAT is living and progress to me and I love how you encourages us to think. xox Wilma

Wilma: Always so good to hear from you. Thanks for dropping by the alternaview again. I think you make an important point about taking responsibility for everything that comes our way and how we manage through it. When we appraoch things from this angle, it is empowering and we realize that we have the ability to manage through anything in the best way. We just have to continually choose to do so. Thanks again for the comment. I really appreciate it.

Well done Sibyl!

I 100% with you on Common belief #1: This too shall pass – when you said we have a role to play. That is so true. In the words of one of my heroes, John Maxwell – “Experience isn’t the best teacher. Evaluated experience is the best teacher.” Our role is to push through those tough times and then reflect and learn from those experiences so that we can grow and become better because of it.

Keep up the good stuff!

Ryan: Thanks for the comment and sharing that quote from John Maxwell. It really is a good one and is so true. We really do have to make certain we are actually living and learning and them making informed decisions. Thanks for sharing that and I agree with you that our role really is to push through those times and grow. Thanks again for the comment and stopping by the alternaview. I really appreciate it.

I like this post Sibyl. There are so many expressions out there and looking at them from different angles is helpful. Many of them sound shallow and simple (cut and dried) but usually have a profound meaning that can be quite useful to discover.

Hey Sibyl,

“However, the reality is that no matter what the outcome, we actually are winning in one way or another,” A truly inspired statement. The one way that I could turn that into a metaphor is when playing sport. Don’t get me wrong, I love winning, but the winning is not the be all and end all. I would so much rather have great game where I lose than a game that I win easily. The challenging game allows me that growth. Very often that is what occurs when we are tested but we don’t always realise it or acknowledge it at a conscious level.
