31 Great Habits That Will Help Free You of Bad Habits

So often in life we are trying to break bad habits. There are things we do that we would prefer not to do any longer.  Biting nails, smoking, drinking, over eating, and complaining are just a few examples.

And, while there is nothing wrong with wanting to rid ourselves of bad habits and live better, perhaps instead of focusing on not doing certain things and breaking bad habits, we would be better off focusing on great things we should be doing. Maybe the best way to get rid of a bad habit is to fall in love with its opposite and always work to have great things as a part of what you do in your everyday life.

So, instead of focusing on dieting, we focus on how great we feel when we don’t over eat.  We fall in love with the feeling of how great we feel when we have had a day of healthy eating.  We work on developing our appreciation for healthy foods and exercise.  We fall in love with how much more energy we have when we eat right and how much better we feel about ourselves.  We focus on doing things that are consistent with creating those great feelings associated with healthy eating and we don’t focus on “not” eating.

This approach of focusing on doing those great things in life would apply to freeing ourselves of all bad habits.

Maybe, just maybe, if we live focused on creating and maintaining good habits, there would not be enough room in our lives for the bad ones. So, instead of focusing on breaking something down or getting rid of something, let’s try a new approach.  Let’s try to fill our lives with great habits.  Here is a list of 31 Great Habits (in no particular order):

  1. Throughout the course of a day, look for things to love instead of things to complain about
  2. Expect the best … Don’t just hope for it
  3. Don’t take other peoples’ issues personally; If people are being rude or behaving toward you in a not so great way, it usually has more to do with them than it does with you
  4. Always look beyond the surface … Is there something more to be noticed?
  5. Exercise, but don’t overdo it
  6. Really listen when other people speak; care about what they say and connect with them
  7. Look for the lessons within every situation and be open to learn from them
  8. Improve your perspective step by step until you are out of any mud puddles you may find yourself in
  9. Stay close to your center; never stray too far
  10. Be open minded about everything and everyone
  11. Look at generosity as an opportunity, not a responsibility
  12. Be Flexible (even if you are only pretending at first)
  13. Eat healthy, but don’t starve yourself; find healthy things to eat that you can develop an appreciation for
  14. Read great books that impact you at your core and point you in the direction of really living better
  15. Read the signs that come your way
  16. Look for and appreciate what is working in your life
  17. Work hard consistently and find ways to be passionate about what you are doing
  18. Be patient and allow things to evolve on their own time line; No false deadlines
  19. Present your opinions without being emotionally charged or attached to them
  20. Ask yourself questions and be patient until you find your own answers
  21. Smile, laugh and have fun with life
  22. Reflect, relax and be silent
  23. Enjoy your time with other people
  24. Make decisions that are consistent with who you are and your own truth
  25. Really, really, really live in the moment; pour your passion into whatever it is you are doing
  26. Expect the best out of other people and focus on their best qualities
  27. Compliment people as soon as you notice something great
  28. Always be willing to forgive and move on
  29. Keep your mind clean and free; don’t clog your mind with nonsense
  30. Always look for the opportunity in any situation or challenge
  31. See the trees, but know there is a forest

Now that is an awesome and inspiring list. I really like #14. I have recently been trying to acheive this very thing. It is similar to the relationships that you have in your life. I try to stay around positive and influencial people but I will come home and watch junk on tv. What goes in, comes back out. So if I spend my time educating and improving myself by reading the only effect I would display should be the positive ones. Thanks again. I think it is time to go break some bad habits. :-)

Hey Frank: Thanks for the comment and the real world example. I do think you can really set yourself up to experience things in a great way if you are continually focusing on the right things. What you surround yourself with and what you choose to do everyday definitely matters and if you are doing great things, then there is little room for bad habits. Thanks again for the comment.

Hi Sibyl

Some great habits here. I was about to list my favorites but I would almost recreate the whole list again. I like the idea of focusing on creating new good habits rather than trying to break old ones. Great post.

Sibyl, how nice that both our last posts are about habits. If we can only eliminate all bad habits by having no room for them! I am working hard on it, although I don’t think I have too many bad habits or ever have – perhaps having a more positive attitude constantly is my biggest challenge and I need a HABIT of being positive and with the best attitude in all situations, so thank you for the reminder!!! I need it as I deal with the stress of being gone 8 days! ;)

Hey Farnoosh: We were definitely on the same wavelength:) Frank actually was on our habit wavelength too. I would imagine that you don’t have too many bad habits :) . I think you have the right approach in terms of maintaining a consistent good perspective on things and whatever comes your way. When we can do that, life really does unfold in the greatest ways. Thanks for the comment and I checked you post out already on habits and it was a good one. Have a great weekend.

Marko -- Calm Growth August 3, 2010 at 5:47 pm

In my opinion, the motivation can be divided in two main ways:

1. Motivation by growth.
2. Motivation by negative outcomes.

In the first case, the motivation for action comes from the desire for progress, while in the second case comes from the desire to avoid negative consequences.

In my personal growth, I noticed that the orientation and focus on growth gave me much more effective results as I’ve enjoyed more in implementing them. Focusing on the good instead of bad habits is a good example of our orientation on growth.

To conclude, I like this list and I think that such habits have a much better effect on our lives. :)

Marko: Thanks for the comment and the great explanation of the reasoning behind the approach. I think that was really helpful and a great addition to this post. I really like how you put it about focusing on growth. That is such an important point and focusing on good habits seems to be in line with that approach. Thanks again for sharing your insights.

Hi Sibyl,

That’s a nice list and definitely like the approach of motivation going for the benefits rather than the consequences.

My favorites from the list are:

10 Be open minded about everything and everyone
15 Read the signs that come your way
21 Smile, laugh and have fun with life
27 Compliment people as soon as you notice something great

Just those four would make a world of difference for anyone :)

Love the post Sibyl. My favorite one is 10 because it opens your life to so many more opportunitites and learning experiences.

What you talk about in your post is what I’ve been testing in my own life for a while now and it makes all the difference in making my world a lot happier and a better place. I actually made it into an experiment where if I felt worried abous something (for example), I’d commit to immediately find a happier alternative.

If I may ad one thing to the benefits of thinking in positive light – it reduces stress – mental and physical, which in turn improves your health. So truly everything in our body is connected – thought and physiology.

Anita: You can definitely add one more thing and I appreciate it and agree. You can definitely reduce stress and eliminate fear when you are focused on seeing things in a positive light. It sounds like your approach is a good one and thanks for sharing what has been working for you. It is always good to hear how things are playing out for people in the real world. Thanks again for the comment. Have a great weekend.

Sybil,
Wonderful list!!

Exercise jumped out at me – as there was a time in my life when I overdid this. And there really is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Now I exercise, but moderately – and it works out great!

#21 is one that really has a lot of meaning in my life right now – having fun in this life I’m living is such a wonderful thing – so glad to see this on your list!

I know that I definitely have been guilty of ignoring the need to exercise :) Glad to hear that you are having fun and really living life to its fullest. That is one of the most important things we all should be doing. Thanks again for the comment and stopping by the alternaview.

I love this list Sybil. I’d pick a favorite, but there are just too many that resonate with me.

It’s so much more positive to look at what you can do to live a better life instead of worrying about what you must stop doing. This is a great approach!

I think if we expect the best, we invariable get it. But it must come from a place of confidence not false hope. And you can tell , if your confident if you feel energetic and happy each time you think about it. Anything else is just a downer to your shot glasses of desire.

Take this life with a grain of salt and enjoy the journey, by expecting to reach you destination safe and sound. Once you do that, you’ll be in the pattern of social bliss and financial stability.

I like that term you used … pattern of social bliss. I think once we find our way to that pattern, life opens up for us in so many great ways. Thank you so much for the comment and the insights. Another corker Sibyl. For me a great habit is to be yourself and allow others to do the same. The more we are happier with ourselves the more we settle for life as it is and relax into our skin. Happy souls become kinds souls and the anger in the world diminishes as people aren’y busy complaining, pointing the finger and casting blame as well as being jealous and envious at what others have. Be yourself and live and let live.

This post isn’t an alterna-view – it’s a great view, the right view!

Very true Sibyl. Nature abhors a vacuum — you cannot just drop a habit; you must replace it with something new. If you do not replace it the Force of Fixation rushes the old habit back to you. The only way to do this is to come up with a replacement and deliberately repeat it again and again until it sticks.

Sibyl;

This is a great list, and I love this approach to changing our habits. :)

It reminds me of something I’ve heard many times about how our subconscious mind cannot distinguish between the negative and positive, as in if you say, “I don’t want to overeat” it just hears or understands “I want to overeat”.

It seems to me that putting the changes we want into a positive perspective like this is also a good way to get our subconscious mind on board and working toward it, as well. ;)
