5 of the Most Important alternaviews You Need to Live Better

I am sure it comes as no surprise that the way we see the world, our perspectives and beliefs really matter and affect who we are and everything we do.

It is easy to become accustomed to seeing things a certain way and many times we have had the same perspectives for a long time.  Our perspectives have had years to crystallize and settle in our minds and since they have been there for as long as we can remember, many times we have accepted them to be true, without really questioning or confirming their validity.

As a result, it is necessary from time to time to conduct a self audit of our perspectives and question every single thing we have ever believed in and see if it has served us well or if it has held us back.  Has it positively impacted our life or has it been a hindrance? And, if we identify perspectives that are problematic and not really helping us move forward, then we should push ourselves to look at things differently.

We should literally aim to develop different perspectives that may be the opposite of what we initially believed to be true, but are in fact true and helpful perspectives that will allow us to accomplish more and move easier through life. These perspectives are called alternaviews.

And although there are many…

Here are 5 alternaviews that we definitely should have:

1. There is no such thing as luck.

We should never attribute anything to luck because it overlooks the fact that we are in more control of our life than we may think.  When good things happen or work out for us, it is because they were supposed to and they are a direct result of something we put in motion.  All those times we thought we were just lucky or in the right place at the right time were actually circumstances we helped to create.

And, if we can identify what actions and beliefs have worked well for us in the past, we can develop an approach that we can consistently apply to all different types of situations and know for certain that we are setting good things in motion.

2. “Okay” is just not good enough.

We should never settle for mediocrity or become complacent with anything just being “okay” in life.  This applies to everything in our life…we shouldn’t have “okay” friends, we shouldn’t have an “okay” amount of dedication and work ethic, we shouldn’t have an “okay” relationship.  The list goes on and on.

It is not that everything in life has to be amazing, but if we feel that something is just meeting average standards, then we need to be motivated to improve it or change our perspective of it.  Why? Because how we feel about the things and people in our life determines our overall experience and how our life will unfold.  We need to make certain that we feel positive and energized about the things we have chosen to be a part of our life.  And, to the extent we don’t, we need to either change the things or change the way we are looking at them.

3. There is no such thing as a setback.

Any challenges that arise do so for a reason.  They are there to grab our attention and remind us it may be necessary to make some changes or modify our current approach.  What we have mislabeled as a setback, is actually something that is preparing us for advancement in the future.  It is providing us with information and feedback that we need in order to accomplish what we desire.

If we can recognize that what we learn is an integral part of our future success, we will be less apt to be discouraged by challenges.  We will realize that if we pay attention and learn from challenges, they will actually position us for success.

4.  Being realistic is overrated.

When we really want to accomplish something huge…something amazing…something beyond what we have ever thought was possible, we will let go of being realistic.  We will do more than just our ordinary, realistic goal setting and add a HUGE goal to our list of things we want to accomplish.

We will not confine ourselves by thinking we have to be realistic and we will add that one thing we have always felt we were meant to do to our list.  We will then take that first step…a small step, and begin working toward our #1 desire.  Regardless of whatever else it is we are doing, we will make certain we take small steps everyday and we will continually work toward our goal.  Why? Because we have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain.

5. Don’t aim to be perfect…aim to be diligent

When we set out to do anything, it seems to be the logical conclusion that we strive to do it perfectly.

However, aiming for perfection can be overwhelming because we are reaching for something that seems to be too lofty and difficult to reach.  It can also lead us to mistakenly arrive at the wrong conclusion that we aren’t making progress, simply because we have not reached our personal definition of perfection. And, we can be so focused on perfection that we sacrifice our ability to learn by doing and accept the mistakes we may make along the way.

Instead of aiming for perfection, we should instead aim only to be diligent.  This removes the handcuffs that come with perfection and requires only that we pursue something with an unwavering commitment. It gives us a recognizable goal to strive for and something we can feel good about doing when we have consistently maintained our dedication and focus.  Aiming to be diligent is really what sets us up for success.

Conclusion

Don’t accept things as true just because you have always believed them.  Don’t be afraid to question what you believe in.  Search for the truth…for alternaviews that inspire and encourage you.  Reprogram yourself where necessary and live your life according to your new perspectives…that is the alternaview.

Sibyl,

I liked these four tips! but I think I like to think if you did your best but it turned out to be “okay”, that is fine by me. We all can not be #1. I like #5 the best, don’t aim to be perfect, be diligent, I simply love it.

I think you must be so positive person in real life too to come up with such an alternative views! Good for you.

Hey Preeti: Thanks for the comment. I don’t know if I am always 100% positive all the time, but I definitely try to always put things into perspective and see the bigger picture :) I hear what you are saying about things being okay and definitely agree that if things happen, they do so for a reason and so we should always accept them. Perhaps they are actually more than okay and it is all about our perspective :) Thank you so much for always dropping by and living such great comments. I really appreciate it and hope you are having a great weekend.

Hi Sibyl,

Another great post! I especially like:

# 4 – Big things have been accomplished by dreamers that defy the reality of the moment being lived by everyone else

# 5 – Keep moving forward to accomplish while doing our best without slowing down for perfectionism.

I like the way you explain these concepts, making it easy to understand and follow these simple yet really important advice :)

Raul: Thanks for the comment and I am glad that you appreciated these 5 alternaviews. I like the way you put it to not slow down for perfectionism. I think that is a great way to explain it and it allows us to always move forward, despite the fact that the conditions may not be as ideal as we would have liked. The reality is that we have to make progress and continually work at things and that is by all means better than getting stuck because things are just not perfect.

I love #4.

What is the purpose of living if you never try reach for something that may be beyond your grasp? All you would do is end you with a lot of “I wish I would have” statements as you mature in life. Heck, I have a lot of these very statements in my head now about things I could have done when I was younger that would have made my life better. Being realistic takes away the best gift we were given as children and that is imagination. If I ever want to do something impossible the worst thing I could ever do is try to stay realistic about it. That wouldn’t motivate me to try. Instead it would make me give up. Great job Sibyl. I enjoyed reading this.

Frank: Thanks for the comment and I am glad that you enjoyed the post. I totally agree with you that it is easy to look back on life and see those times you were “being realistic” which actually translated in holding yourself back from what you were really capable of reaching. I really do agree with you that life is about shooting for the stars. I think we just have to keep reminding ourselves of that reality so that we never fall short. Thank you so much for the comment. I really appreciate it.

Hi Sybil,
I have just been reading Arvinds blog about luck and commented that we all make our own luck, depending on whether we believe we are lucky or not!
I like no. 2, when you ask people how they are and they say ‘okay’, it is just so non commital and mediocre. I’d rather they say, ‘I’m bloody awful actually’ (if they can’t say, I’m fantasic obviously!), at least their is some emotion there.

Hey Kate: Thanks for the great comment. I definitely agree with your comment on Arivnd’s blog. We definitely create our own circumstances and the question is whether or not we are going to take advantage of that ability. On another note, there is nothing great about mediocre. We should always aim for more and expect more. That is what we are all truly entitled to. Thanks again for the comment and stopping by the alternaview.

Hi Sibyl,

Very nice points. In regards to the first tip (luck), we create our luck. Some times people think that when they don’t get what they want, they start blaming their “luck.” On the contrary, they make their luck. Also, in regards to the third point about the setbacks, we always should learn from our setbacks. Just as you mentioned, they prepare us for advancement. Thanks for sharing this post Sibyl :)

I think once we realize this, everything is ours for the taking. Thanks for stopping by and thanks for the comment. Much appreciated.

4. Being realistic is overrated.

I love it, I love , I love it.

Whats the point of being realistic. Being realistic is the fastest route to mediocrity. Never be realistic. Look at the apple phone. Is touching a screen and getting the internet even in the subway station realistic? Is being a underground rapper, then making it big over a mix-tape, you made in your bedroom realistic? I think most will say no. But those who understand my point , understand that there is no such thing as being realistic. Be you.. Dream big. And be the best!

Great post!

When we can really take the handcuffs off and dream big dreams, it really is amazing what we can accomplish. Thank you so much for the great comment and stopping by the alternaview. I really appreciate it.

Hi Sibyl,

All five of these alternaviews speak to me. Like Jonathan above I did a bee-line to the “being realistic one.” Life is a giant science fiction movie – just go out at night and look up at the stars. Those who walk around scolding each other “to be realistic” may not have looked up for some time. The universe goes on forever or so it seems! And here on Earth, the different animals, the flowers, the tornadoes, the earthquakes, the tidal waves. I mean all of it’s surreal because surreal is what I’d call life on Earth!

So, why be realistic in a surreal world? That’s just a way to try and control our out of control existence.

Thanks! Giulietta

Giulietta: I love that. You are so right about life itself being unrealistic and why on earth wouldn’t we take advantage of the same opportunities to design our own future and how we fit into the world. Sometime we all just need to go for it and that means not allow ourselves to be restrained by things we think are realistic. Thanks so much for the comment and stopping by the alternaview. I really appreciate it.

HI Sibyl, the underlying point for all this is for me this one; “Don’t be afraid to question what you believe in. ”
THAT for me has been the starting point to alternaviews in my life.
We are so conditioned to NOT be the greatness we are, to NOT do what we love to do, to NOT do what would be the best for us, all based on uniform beliefs dealt to us by a status quo who is NOT allowing our uniqueness.
Nothing we are actually been told about how life should be lived is serving us, when I started to question I at least found that not much was actually useful to believe if I wanted to have a great life. It was painful to discover that and very hard to remedy as beliefs are unfortunately our auto pilot which setting is hard to change.
However it is worth becoming aware of beliefs and finding out how to change them as then I can leave ‘being realistic, it is all luck, I have to be perfect’ behind me to begin living.

Wilma: Thanks for the great comment and I couldn’t agree more. We have to be willing to reprogram ourselves and remove the bad conditioning that we have been exposed to for a lifetime. The greatest thing is though once we are willing to question our beliefs and find our own answers, we can accomplish more than we ever would have thought was possible. Thank you so much for the comment. I really appreciate it.

I love how you said being realistic is over rated. If everyone had done so, we would still be lighting candles everyday, and travel on the level we now enjoy would be impossible.

Being a little unrealistic can be scary, but I think all true progress is that way.

Joshua: I couldn’t agree more. The best progress and development usually happens when people are out of their comfort zone. I think once we figure out how to get comfortable just going for it and not allowing anything to hold us back, that is when we really set ourselves up for greatness. Thanks so much for the comment and the insight. I really appreciate it.

Dear Sibyl, if my husband read this post, he would swear that I wrote #2 = “Okay” just not good enough. It sounds too much like one of my (loving) lectures at home to him and if others indulge me to everyone else too :) Complacency is the most subtle and yet most harmful feeling that slowly comes over and makes itself comfortable in our presence. I am so paranoid about complacency and I am so happy you made a point of it here. We should stay so aware and so alert and so very vigilant about our goals and actions and even ordinary achievements from day to day…..thank you for this!!!

Farnoosh: I couldn’t agree more with what you said … we can never become complacent with anything in life and when it comes to goals and actions, we most certainly should ensure we are always accomplishing as much as we can. It is too easy to fall into the trap of just settling and taking the easier way out, but if we always have our eye on greatness and a distaste for mediocrity, we will be much, much better off. Thanks so much for the comment.

Hi Sibyl

I really like “don’t aim to be perfect – aim to be diligent”

It reminds me of one of the best bits of advice I got about business which was – under promise but over deliver. Don’t stress yourself out by promising a customer the world – impress him by how well you carry out the work.

Great post!

Marion: That is so true and definitely a great rule to live by in the business world. There is nothing better than having someone you have hired over deliver and do positive things for you that are not expected. I do think that diligence can get you so far. When you are consistently performing and dedicated to performing in a great way day after day, it is amazing what you can accomplish.

Sibyl,

Another great article! Let me tell you that this article mirrors some of my recent material that I’ll share below.

1. There is no such thing as luck. You better believe it, but if you want to…simply work harder, and you’ll find that your luck will greatly and quickly increase. Use whatever words you need – but understand that your output, dictates your input.

2. “Okay” is just not good enough. We’ve heard it before…right – but still people complain about their results in life but don’t change their actions. If you want the best, be the best.

3. There is no such thing as a setback. In a recent article of mine: Always Win…Even in Defeat I covered the attitude of always winning, even from a loss. Additionally in another article I wrote recently called: Evade the Fear of Failure I touched on the fact that we will all fail, it’s a part of life…so put your self in the best position by preparing, then act, so if the destined (failure) happens, you can fail as quickly as possible – giving you the ability to rebound and reach your goal as quickly as possible.

4. Being realistic is overrated. Think outside of the box…it’s a common phrase but not common in practice. It’s one of those business buzz words that people use, but rarely follow.

5. Don’t aim to be perfect…aim to be diligent. In my article: The 6 Core Values of a Hustler I make mention that : It’s imparative to set realistic goals and expectations for yourself…For instance, seeking perfection is impossible. You will never be perfect. However, aspiring for excellence is possible. Perfection and excellence may go in the same category, but only one is actually obtainable.”

J.K. Thanks so much for the great comment and sharing all of the posts that you wrote on similar topics. I will definitely have to stop back by your blog and check them out. I was already there a couple of days ago and you have done some really good things with your blog. I think the insights you added to each of these alternaviews are really helpful and great additional information. I particularly appreciated what you said about not thinking that ordinary performance will give you dynamic results. It is so true and such a great point. Thanks again for stopping by the alternaview and sharing your thoughts.
