How to Manage Through Any Situation: Rely On Your Beliefs

“This too shall pass”

“You create your own future”

“Live in the Now”

“Everything happens for a reason”

These are just some of the many truths and beliefs we subscribe to.  When situations or challenges arise, we may even refer to them or offer them as advice to other people. We recognize the validity of these beliefs and deep down we know we can rely on them to hold true in every situation.

The Challenge: Not Forgetting What we Know to Be True When We are in the Thick of It

When a situation arises, we may become so preoccupied with what is going on that we lose sight of the truths that should be guiding us through the situation and pointing us in the right direction.  Our emotions start running wild, we get sucked in and before we know it, we have lost any sense of the calmness that should stem from the reality and the truth we say we believe in.

As an example, when things are going well and you feel as if you are progressing smoothly through life, it is easy to realize that “everything happens for a reason” or the importance to “Live in the Now”.

But, what about those times when things don’t go as you like?  When issues and challenges arise that knock you off your feet?  The big things like a breakup, a divorce, or the loss of a job and even the small things like your laptop breaking, losing an important file or losing your cell phone.

How do we really live differently and not allow the truths we believe in to slip out of our memory when a challenge arises?  How do we not get so caught up in what is going on that we remember the beliefs we know deep down are true that really can help us through the situation?

The alternaview: Rely on Your Beliefs

It is one thing to say you believe in great truths and beliefs. It is wonderful if you can recite truisms and use them as positive affirmations. It is yet another thing to actually integrate those beliefs into your life. To actually live differently and make behavioral changes so that your actions and feelings are aligned with the beliefs you know deep down are true.

One of the best questions we can ask ourselves when any issue arises is:  Are we able to rely on the beliefs we know are true and disallow the situation from sucking us in and getting the best of us?

We need to always make certain our actions and feelings about what we are going through live up to the beliefs we know deep down are true.  We should have enough confidence in our beliefs that they are able to positively impact our actions and feelings when challenges arise.  Our beliefs should trump any challenges and situations should never be able to interfere with our peace of mind or cause us to totally dismiss what we know to be true.

We shouldn’t find ourselves in situations where we are stressed out, overwhelmed or upset about any situation, because our underlying beliefs should have a calming presence and impact how we deal with everything.

Life as a Training Ground: Putting our Beliefs to the Test

Life is always going to throw us experiences and we are going to encounter challenges that put our beliefs to the test. However, we must believe so strongly in our beliefs that they are integrated into our everyday living.

Our beliefs should be so firmly planted at the forefront of our minds, that it would literally be impossible for us to get frazzled by a situation and forget what we know deep down to be true.  We catch ourselves before the downward spiral catches our complete focus and attention.

Life is our training ground and we have an opportunity to learn from every experience and continually improve the way we approach similar situations in the future. Eventually we reach a point where we realize we are living our lives in a way that perfectly reflects our beliefs. We have raised the level of our responses and let go of any thoughts or decisions that are not in line with our beliefs.

The first place to begin each and every time something undesired arises and you begin to get worked up is a place of reflection. Step back and ask yourself one question … Are your actions and feelings consistent with those things you know deep down are true? And, if they are not, be willing to work at changing them, step by step until they are. We have to be open to living differently and making better decisions that are more in tune with the beliefs and truths we hold in high regard … that is the alternaview.

Hi Sibyl,

Great post :) We always have to do what we think is right and what our beliefs are. The problem is many people don’t have a clear idea on what their true beliefs are. Once we are clear on what our beliefs are, we can start to take action and make decisions that are in tune with our beliefs. Thanks for sharing.

Dia: You are so right … it is all about making sure you know what your beliefs are and once you discover them, you really can use them as a cornerstone for everything that you do. I think that we should spend time thinking and finding our own answers and truths so that we always know which way we should be going even if we take some detours along the way. Thanks for the comment.

Hi Sibyl.

The times where I have stuck with my beliefs and personality were the times where I looked like a concrete rock that could handle anything, and the times where I wavered are ones I am not glad for. If I like bringing energy to a group gathering, and that is my style, not doing that because of certain people is a terrible idea. It then lets people know that they had an effect on my personality, and they probably didn’t even want that to be the case.

I have been on both ends of this, as I have shifted for others, and at times, not shifted at all.

As you said, “our underlying beliefs should have a calming presence”, and they sure do when we maintain them. They calm us down because we know we have a bigger objective to maintain than the small event that is taking place.

When I feel calm, I take risks I wouldn’t take if I felt out of place or uncertain. Therefore, to get to that great level of risk-taking, we have to keep our beliefs and personality in mind.

I like making jokes sometimes too. If I don’t do that, because I am uncomfortable or something, opportunities will be missed.

Armen: Thanks for the great comment and I really liked how you explained the bigger objective that our beliefs point us in the direction of. That is such a great point and great addition to this post. Sometimes we do have to be reminded of the bigger picture and the importance of seeing things holistically. Our beliefs can by all means make bring that top of mind and that is another amazing benefit they offer us. Thanks again for the comment. I really appreciate it.

I love the message in this post Sibyl – our core values and beliefs should be the driving force of all in our life. Unfortunately a lot of people still haven’t got a clue of what theirs are. Or they may have the notion but have not taken the time to get things clear in their mind.

And as you say if you’re not clear about your values then you can’t default to them in hard times.

I found that once I got clear about what I deeply believe in and wrote those 5-6 values down – things became a little easier. It’s like with everything in life that is important – to be good at it you need to practice. The more you review your values the clearer driver they become throughout the day…

Oh, also the clearer your values become the more difficult it becomes to fail. You only fail if you do not live by your values…

@Armen – you mention changing behaviour according to who’s around us. Tony Robbins offers a free assesment that I found fascinating and revealing – it describes your parsonality when you’re alone and when you think you’re being observed (or in the company of others). Whilst it’s not a secret that we behave differently in the two situations, the specifics are rather interesting… I hope you don’t mind Sibyl – here is the link to the Tony Robbins test if anyone is interested: http://www.tonyrobbins.com/ue/disc-profile.php?redirected=1

Hey Anita: How are you? Thanks for the comment and for sharing the link to Tony Robbins. I totally don’t mind and really do appreciate you passing it on and adding to the conversation. I like that approach of really understanding those 5-6 values you believe in, writing them down and then relying on your list. I can totally see why things would become much clearer and easier to manage through. Thanks again for sharing your comment and insights and the link. I really appreciate it.

Sibyl,

You showed up and “showed out” with this post, sistah! I love this very enlightening and engaging piece that serves as an affirmation for me this morning to dig deep when life causes me to sometimes “fall under”.

Jennifer: Showed up and Showed out … I will definitely take that :) Thank you so much for the kind words. They really mean a lot and I am so glad that you enjoyed this post and found it helpful. Digging deep, like you said, is sometimes what it is all about. Life can through us some of the fastest curve balls from time to time, but if we can turn within, there is really nothing that can get the best of us. Thanks again for the comment and for always dropping by the alternaview. It is great to have you here.

This is an amazing and encouraging post.

I am one of those people who will easily share and ecourage others with my beleifs but sometimes miss the ball in my own life and actions. I will throw around scripture after scripture, reference after reference, and to my own situations they are just words. They are words that don’t bring about change and action. I have learned just like any other skill that this is one that takes practice and an extreme amount of it to get godd at it. I enjoyed reading this and I know it will help me.

Frank: I think you hit the nail on the head … this is something that takes practice. We really do have to be committed to practicing to rely on your beliefs time and time again, because it is inevitable that things will come up. It really is a process, but the great thing is that once we master it, we are golden. It is not that things will not continue to arise, but rather that they will never be able to get the best of us. I am so glad you enjoyed this post. Thank you for the thoughtful comment.

“This too shall pass”

“You create your own future”

“Live in the Now”

“Everything happens for a reason”

When you put these in the intro, i didn’t even have to read th post ( of course i did tho), but the truth is, these ideologies are the best to rely on. It brings you peace of mind, success, confidence and the ability to handle stressful times.

1. When times get rough, realize it will go away.
2. Your thought sand feelings create what is up ahead, so keep yourself enthusiastic and happy.
3. The present moment is all you have, why waste your time thinking about anything else.
4. Everything is everything. Just be grateful. truly grateful for what you have. And life will work it’s way to you.

Jonathan: I completely agree with you that these are some of the greatest truths and once we figure out how to continually rely on them, they can really get us through anything and exactly where we want to be. I really like the way you broke them all down as well and all 4 of the points you shared are great pointers to the underlying truth we all know deep down. Thanks for the great comment and always stopping by the alternaview.

What a rocker this is Sibyl! Last week my beliefs were put to the test during a trying time. At such points we can often feel alone, standing against the tide and unsure we are correct. But times like this are actual gifts to help fine tune and take ownership of our beliefs. I’m glad to say I did and happier to feel the test was accomplished in my mind. I always remember a quote which may apply here, “For those who don’t believe there is no such thing as proof, for those who do believe no proof is neccessary”. We all need to be a believer somewhere even if it’s on ourselves!

John: What a great comment. Thanks for sharing that story and that really is a great quote. It is so true that sometimes we just have to know deep down that our beliefs are true and not require proof. Sometimes things may not be as clear, but if we can always follow our internal compass that assures us that there is always a way through, there is not way we can’t manage through anything that comes our way. Thanks for the comment.

Hello sibyl
how are you?
thanks for sharing this and you are spot on with us making assumptions that as long as things are going on well, we feel we are making progress(although there’s an an element of truth but there’s a need to strike a balance with respect to managing difficulties and our personal growth).
I feel your post on beliefs has brought this balance to limelight .
my late dad used to tell me the strongest men are those who go through the toughest times and come out on top not those with the biggest muscles lol!!
you highlighted another issue which isn’t really empahsized when it comes to the schools of thought on positive thinking which is ‘integrating our beliefs into our lives’, rather than just reciting pleasing words or having a great imagination.
i could go on and on but….
take care and enjoy the rest of the day

Hi Sibyl .. having been through the whole gambit this year .. and am on the path to the calm moments and actually having a life I control again .. where peace can reign .. I appreciate the reliance on my beliefs and my thoughts – they had to do .. I had to go to the bottom and then I had to bounce out .. I knew all will be well – but at that time .. all could have gone horribly wrong – but I knew it wouldn’t .. and it didn’t .. by the skin of various teeth!

So it is having faith in oneself .. and taking the necessary actions to maintain that belief .. being true to oneself .. it’s been a tough year .. but I’ve come to understand a lot and appreciate the experiences I’ve had ..

thanks for this post and its ideas and concepts .. I do – I’m sure .. but it’s good to be reminded that that is what I’ve been doing! All the best Hilary
