How to Not Make the Same Mistakes Over and Over Again

Have you ever known someone who continues to be confronted with the same issue over and over again? Perhaps this is even something you are personally familiar with? For some reason, there is an issue that continually arises in your life in different circumstances.

Maybe you have continually struggled with the same issues in relationships? Maybe you keep encountering similar challenges at work or with your career? Maybe the same feelings that have held you back from accomplishing everything you can continue to crop up in other situations?

It is not uncommon to run into the same issues and challenges over and over again. Although the circumstances change, the underlying issues can continue to rear their ugly head from time to time in different situations.

And, the logical question is why? Why would the same issues, such as, fear, doubt, obstacles or the same challenges, arise in our lives over and over again in all different types of situations? “Why does this continually keep happening to me?”

Live and Learn: The alternaview

If you continue to experience the same issue or challenge time and time again, it most likely means there is more for you to learn. This is by no means a bad thing, it simply means you have an opportunity to gather some more information and insights that you may have not grasped the first time you encountered the issue.

There is a lesson within the situation that is yours for the taking, you just have to figure out exactly what that lesson is and then make certain you learn it.

This is one of the best things we can do because it sets us up to really grow and learn from every single experience and issue that comes our way. Instead of resenting or questioning challenges and obstacles, we focus our energy on learning from them and set ourselves up to overcome them in the future when they arise again … and they always will in one way or another until we learn from them.

Many times these lessons are the keys to our success and they will serve as the foundation of something amazing we are going to accomplish in the future. We just have to be open to understanding and figure out how to behave differently so we can avoid making the same mistakes we have made before.

It’s easy to fall into the trap where we blame other people for the situation we are in or assume we are just having a string of bad luck. And, while it is certainly true that other people can contribute and cause some of our challenges, there is always a reason why we are personally being affected. It is not something to beat yourself up over, but rather just to understand there is a reason for everything and we have more to learn.

How to use this alternaview:

1. Be on the lookout for repeated issues. We can get so caught up in the issues we are managing through that we overlook the fact that we have experienced something very similar before. You have to be on the lookout for situations or issues that continually arise because there always is a reason.  Recognize the similarities so that you can learn and focus on doing things differently.

2. Be open to learning. You have to be open to learning and understand that if you are going through a challenge or if you have encountered an obstacle, there is something for you to learn. You should have a deep desire to learn and want to figure out how to live each day better than you did the day before.

3. Try to not make the same mistake more than twice. It is highly probable that we are going to make mistakes at least once, and even possible that we will make them twice. However, if we are really tuned in and paying attention, we should catch on to the lesson by the third time. Really focus on what is coming your way and try to learn lessons by the second time around.

4. “When you Lose, Don’t Lose The Lesson”. This is a quote I came across and it is such an important piece of advice. When things don’t go as planned, we should always make sure we are taking away a lesson. Don’t get caught up in your disappointment with a situation, step back and ask yourself, what is the lesson? What can you take away from this situation?

5. Plan out how you will handle it differently next time. Once you understand the lesson, it is important to develop a plan on how you will behave differently if the situation arises again in the future. Figure out how you will improve your response the next time so that when it arises, you can easily recognize it and know how to handle it.

Conclusion

We are all very well aware that life is our training ground. We are supposed to live and learn from the situations and experiences that occur. This means that we must have a heightened sense of awareness and be focused on integrating the things we learn and our wisdom into our every day decisions and actions. Understand that life will provide you with every lesson you need to know, as long as you are open to learning … that is the alternaview.

There are times when you can actually get more from a mistake, than a win. We’re trained to praise the winning performance, whether it be our own or others. We are not motivated to take away learnings from our mishaps – unless we come to an innovative training ground such as alternaview.com. In my eyes, and experience, I think we can gain more from a mistake whether our own or from others (hopefully from others), than we can from a win.

To allow mistakes to repeat is crucial and means that a pattern that needs to be changed, hasn’t been.

In a recent article I wrote called Always Win…Even in Defeat I focussed on the mentality aspect of your attitude in terms of what you take from a win and a loss. I also provided two very quick and easy tips:

Quick tip on winning from a loss
…you should take some form of progress from every situation. For a loss, you can breakdown your path of defeat; your short comings and where planning failed. More importantly, identify ways to change a future outcome if presented the same obstacles, from a loss to a win.

Quick tip on winning form a win
Don’t take victory for what it is unless you take something from it besides the inevitable victory. Understand what lead to your victory by analyzing the steps that you took to reach the goal. Identify ways to be more efficient at obtaining victory in the future, should you be faced with the same scenario.

In my analysis and study, including personal experience in a highly professional arena, I’ve chopped this concept of “repeating mistakes” to this:

1. Ego! Ego can bring a stigmatized blur to our vision; distorting our ability to see things honestly. In general, most people blame others for this mishaps, and rarely take ownership – unless there’s a winning conclusion. This has, in my eyes, become a cultural norm.

2. Laziness. Plain and simple.

For those reading the Alternaviews, it’s obvious that your reach is to not be the norm, to avoid mediocrity…so take the 5 tips that Sibyl offered heavily, not lightly. I’ll be doing the same.

Thanks, as always Sibyl.

Peace

JK: Thanks for the great comment and the excerpt from your post. I really liked what you said about always taking something away regardless of if you win and lose. I also think the way you broke things down into 2 categories is super helpful and points you in the right direction. Thanks for stopping by and visiting the alternaview. It is great to have you commenting here and it adds a lot to the discussion.

I have made the same mistake so many times that I have become numb to the lesson. What is bad is I can tell you exactly what my issue is and what my outcome would be before it would happen. With the insight you provided I can try to start the difficult process of repeating the same issue over and over again. To be honest this is easier said than done. I know what I am suppose to learn but I keep fighting against it because it is not something I am comfortable with yet.

I don’t think I am ready to put someone else’s needs before my own.

Keep up t he great work.

Frank: Thanks for the comment and sharing your experience. It is so true that you can know exactly what is wrong and what you need to do, but still somehow be unable to manage to make the decision you know you should. I think though it is key that you are able to recognize it and then the next step is just continuing to work on it until you naturally choose to make the right decision. It would be much more of an issue if you weren’t even able to recognize your challenges and what you are supposed to do. It sounds like you are already aware and that is a big part of the challenge. Thanks again for sharing. I really appreciate it.

Hi Sybil,
I believe that the tough times we go through are sent to teach us something – if we don’t learn the lesson it will be taught again, albeit in a slightly different way. I try look at every set back as a positive – not always easy but there is always something to take from it. I think you have summed it up perfectly!

Kate: I do agree with you that lessons that go unlearned always come back to us in a slightly different way and the key is to catch them when they return. I think if we are tuned in to what is going on around us and always looking to learn, we will generally recognize every opportunity we have to learn and we can avoid making the same mistakes. Thanks so much for the great comment. I really appreciate it.

Hi Sibyl,

Very nice post! I believe many of us repeat certain mistakes over and over again. I agree with you that it just means there is more for us to learn. I believe one of the best things we can do is learn from the mistake and know the exact reasons why we keep repeating the mistake over and over again. Then, make a commitment not to repeat it again. Thanks for sharing Sibyl :)

Dia: Thanks for the comment. I totally agree that one of the best things we can do is to learn what the reasons are for us making the mistake and then put things into place that will help us avoid making the same mistakes in the future. Once we are able to continually do that, we open ourselves up to really making great progress and learning more and more. Thanks again for the comment. I really appreciate it.

Sibyl,
It’s true – we do make the same mistakes over and over until we address the underlying issues as to why.
I’ve done it by leaving the financial industry 3x and always going back. When I go back I’m extremely sorry I did.

Your tips are superb! This time – I’m going to really do it. I’ve been planning it a little differently this time.
Thanks for offering me just what I needed to hear – what a wonderful coincidence!

Hope you have a marvelous weekend Sibyl.
All the best,
Angela

Angela: Thanks for the comment and the real world example. It is always helpful to hear how things play out in the real world if we are committed to living and learning. I think it really is all about recognizing the patterns that are working against you and then actively choosing to pursue a different approach. It sounds as if you have done that … congrats. Thanks again for the comment. I really appreciate it.

Dear Sybil,

Great post. So much can be learned from patterns, our patterns, and those of others. Mistakes, even big ones, are really pretty predictable, given the patterns of our choices, behaviors, etc. This is where meditation and/or other means of developing our awareness can be so helpful. I like to call on a process of “going from the dance floor to the balcony.” We have to live and participate on the dance floor. And, it’s helpful to gain perspective and clarity about our patterns by taking time out to go up and have a look at things from the balcony.

Of course, we shouldn’t spend all our lives in either place. One can involve too much action without enough thought, and the other, too much thought without action. Instead, if we can develop a new pattern or practice of living and reflecting on our lives from the dance floor, to the balcony, and from the balcony to the dance floor, we are less likely to repeat the same mistakes too many times over and over again, but can recognize potential pitfalls, and begin new processes of growing beyond them.

Hope that is helpful. Peace and all good,

Diane

Diane: Thanks for the great comment. I really liked the analogy you made and you are so right that we have to move back and forth from reflecting on our lives to taking the appropriate action. I agree with you that we can’t just do one and think that things will fall into place as they should. I really thought your comment and insight was a great addition to the post. Thanks for sharing your wisdom and pointing us all in the right direction. I really appreciate it.

When you have an open mind, you see things differently. You allow yourself to analyze the situation your in, and open the door to seeing past, your previous mistakes. This allows you to overcome the same thing over an d over again. Giving you the ability to rise above and separate yourself from your past self. The side of you that repeats mistakes, from the new you.The one who, never does the same thing twice unless it feels good and is congruent with you want to become.

Jonathan: Thanks so much for the comment. I think you touched on the key point … everything really does fall into place when you have an open mind and are willing to live and learn and do things differently. It really is all about allowing yourself to learn and move on. Thanks so much for the comment again. I really appreciate you sharing your wisdom and insights at the alternaview.

Beautifully written and straight to the point! Loving blessings!

Hello Sibyl,
How are you?
Thanks for sharing this article. It was really meaty lol!!!!
Being open to learning is important in dealing with mistakes.Although some mistakes are painful, create losses, drag us behind….. there’s always a lesson to be learnt if we have the right attitude. Besides bouncing back from our mistakes is the only way we can make any progress.I am also of the opinion once we are open to learning, the chances of us making the same mistakes repeatedly are slim not forgetting, it’s not just about learning the lesson but making an effort to carry it out with a proper plan and alternative approaches.
Take care and enjoy the rest of the day

Ayo: Thanks for the comment. I am glad that you thought the post was meaty :) I couldn’t agree with you more that it is so important to put alternative approaches to work when the ones you have always relied on are just not working for you. The key is to be aware of the things that are working against you and then to be open enough to change them. Thanks again for the comment. I really appreciate it.

> “When you Lose, Don’t Lose The Lesson”.
I like that.

One quote that stuck with me long ago is, “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” It always reminds me to change my approach.

J.D. Thanks for the comment and the definition of insanity is also a quote that has stuck with me as well. It really points you in the right direction and requires you to break free from patterns that are working against you. It just makes no sense to keep doing something the same way that is not producing the results you want. I totally agree with you. Thanks for the comment.

Hi Sibyl

I enjoyed this post. Yes I agree that there are lessons to be learned out there. I think making mistakes and getting things wrong are great. The problem comes when the “mistake” is repeated over and over. Sadly when that happens people don’t see it as a lesson that requires to be learned to move on. They blame others for it. They say – it is just the way life is. Soon they don’t see it as something they have the power to change.

Thanks for a great post

Marion: Thanks for the comment and I completely agree there is always something to be learned from mistakes. As you said, the key is to not make the same ones over and over again and to not learn the lesson. It is all about living and learning and that means we need to pay attention and learn from the things we experience and the challenges that come our way. Thanks so much for the comment. Much appreciated.

Great post, Sybil. It’s so important to look out for our own patterns. Like you said, there’s a lesson in it for us. It’s easy to just get frustrated because life keeps dealing you a crappy card, but that doesn’t help us to grow. We have to look at the pattern, take responsibility for it, and commit ourselves to discovering why we’re attracting the same issue. Then and only then can we stop the cycle.

Nea: Thanks for the comment. I really liked what you said about looking out for our own patterns. I think that is such a great way to put it and it is so important to be cognizant of the things that are working against us. If we can identify patterns that are holding us back, we can chip away at them one step at a time and really open ourselves up to great things. Thanks again for the comment.

Sybil – Thank you for the post. It’s been quite a journey for me to get to the point that I can accept mistakes, embrace them, and learn from them. I really appreciated Point #4. “When you Lose, Don’t Lose The Lesson”. What a great quote and worth practicing the discipline so that it eventually becomes a more natural response. I appreciate that you have provided a community for those of us on the journey of becoming “learners” to share our experiences.
