One Quick Way to Instantly Improve Your Day

Do you want to instantly improve your day? If you were to break your day into parts, you would easily see that each day is comprised of many different little segments of time. There is the period of time where you are getting dressed and ready for work, your morning breakfast or coffee time, the commute to work, the morning conference call, etc. … the list of daily events goes on and on.

As we move through our day, we may just go from one thing to the next and not really ever have the opportunity to slow down. We are focused on doing whatever is in front of us in the best way possible and there usually is so much going on that it is easy to get sucked into all the activity.

Is This Really How We Should Move Through Our Day?

Despite the fact that it is by all means important to focus on one thing at a time and do each thing to the best of our ability, should we really allow ourselves to get completely consumed with the tasks we are completing? Isn’t there something more we need to be aware of as we move through our day?

Yes, it is great if we are able to maintain a lot of focus and produce high quality results, but it is equally important that we are also able to have a great frame of mind as we move through the day. At all times we should be aware of all the great things around us.

The alternaview

In addition to being productive, we also want to feel happy, content and at our best.

That means we have to do something more.

We need to focus some of our attention on conjuring up and maintaining positive emotions and feelings throughout the day. And, a great way to be able to consistently do this is to take notice of the little things we may usually overlook because we are consumed with what we are doing.

There is Something Great To Notice Every Moment

There is something great for us to notice every single moment of the day and the key is to be aware of exactly what that is as we move through our day. Often times it is the little things we may miss out on enjoying and appreciating … the beauty of a sunrise, the smile and laughter of your child, the kindness of the stranger that opens the door, the friendly and happy receptionist, the great taste of your morning tea or latte, the peaceful commute to work, the list goes on and on as long as you are looking.

There really is nothing better than being able to continually notice and appreciate all the great things that are always around you. When some of your attention is focused on doing this as you move through your day, great feelings just naturally flow and build on one another. It is the positive domino effect at work and each good feeling helps to create the next one and the next one until you have a day filled with great moments since all moments are connected.

And, that is really what it is all about.

You move through your day with a lot of productivity and you just feel great because you are able to appreciate the things around you. The greatest thing is that you can literally choose to instantly put this skill to work whenever you notice yourself falling into a slump or sucked into the hustle and bustle of life.

Don’t go through your day on autopilot or be so consumed with what you are doing that you don’t notice anything else. Every time you can remember, be aware of the great things around you. Choose to tune into all the things you can appreciate about the day and the people around you. You will be amazed at the positive impact this will have on your day … that is the alternaview.

Living on autopilot is the worst way to live and I think we should only do it when we are low on motivation, as Eleanor Roosevelt suggested, so it gets us going into something that we know we love to do but lack current motivation. Otherwise, noticing small things and not letting the monotony get to us, that’s such a strong message, Sibyl and I only wish someone had helped me do this better 10 years ago when I set out on my career oh so seriously and when things went oh so wrong oh so often…Live and learn! Now I sometimes slip out to the balcony to read a few pages of my classic and catch a few sun rays before slipping back to work. I cherish my hours and no one is going to rush me to get through them…. :) !

I think when one realizes that they are blessed to to have life, appreciation for each day becomes a constant. Since no day is promised, to have another day is a blessing.

I just wrote the following on DOK’s most recent blog last night (about what inspires me):
I have 3 healthy, young kids, a beautiful and healthy wife…how could I ever have a bad day! Seriously!

When you live in perspective of what’s important to you, your life becomes rich, no matter the amount of money you make. If you don’t believe me just try it.

Don’t be zombie’d, make each day count. Cease the day as they stay. Life is short, tomorrow is not guaranteed, so be conscious and be grateful.

If you need help on “Appreciating the Little Things“, then you’re in the right place. Sybil understands how to do just that, and motivate others to do the same.

Peace

One thing you can so today to improve your day is SMILE. Open your closed emotion less mind and just smile. It will take you a long way.

Great point, Sibyl. Focusing our energy on maintaining a soaring attitude will naturally have us exponentially more productive. A well groomed mind is continually being weeded of wearisome thoughts, and reseeded with encouraging ones of appreciation. Appreciation are the seeds from which a new attitude is sown.

This is wonderful advice Sibyl! It is the little things we notice that give so much richness to our lives. That butterfly that flitted about when you went out to water your garden, or the waive hello from a neighbor’s child on his way to school. Small but deeply felt and treasured memories that add a layer of sweet depth to our lives, not unlike the thick layer of chocolate frosting on a cake, without which we couldn’t call our lives complete.

Angela: Thanks for the comment and adding your insights to this post. I really appreciated what you said about the small, but deeply felt and treasured memories. Those really are the things that add so much to our lives and allow things to just open up for us. I really do think that once we integrate this into our everyday living, we can really live in the greatest way and feel so great about everything around us. I am glad to hear that has been your experience as well. Thanks again for the comment.

Thank you for this beautiful reminder. Sometimes it helps me to put little visual cues here and there to help me remember to slow down, to be thankful, to appreciate. (I sometimes use tiny hot pink sticky notes, and place them in random places in my work notes.) I also try to use certain sounds that I hear naturally throughout the day (the chime that signals new email, for example) as cues to stop, slow down and appreciate.

Sibyl September 11, 2010 at 7:45 am

Susie: Thanks so much for the comment. I really love that idea of having cues throughout your day that you can count on to remind you to slow down and appreciate all you have around you. It is such a great idea because it is so easy to get caught up in your day and all the zillions of activities you are responsible for doing. I think that is a great way to consistently remind yourself to be continually appreciative. Thanks so much for the insight and adding your recommendations to this post.

Hi Sibyl,

When we are truly awake, we notice just how amazing life is! Not falling into the trap of taking your life for granted takes some conscious effort. It’s easy to slip into autopilot, as you point out.

Remember what I said a few posts ago about borrowing what Michael Bungay Stanier said, looking at the sky and saying, “how fantastic,” that’s what it takes an effort to see how marvelous this mystery called life is.

thx! Giulietta

Giulietta: Thanks for the comment. I really do like that insight you shared from Michael Bungay Stanier. It really is about making sure you are aware as often as possible of the simple things and the big things that are there for you to appreciate. That really is so true and such a great way to live. Thank you again for the comment. I really appreciate it.

I totally agree Sybil. We have to stop and think about why we are doing all this living stuff. It’s all very well to be focused and productive and to earn money at a job, but we have to stop and demand a payoff – i.e. we have to get some fun out of life.

I used to work a 9 to 5 job in London which pretty much got me out the house when dark, and back home after dark. At one stage I decided that although the job pays well – it’s not worth letting my life pass by.

Anyway – I think you make an awesome point. One thing I’ve implemented in my daily habits is to do one thing every day that makes me truly happy. That way I remember to live life…

Anita: I love that daily habit … do one thing every day that truly makes you happy. That is really, really, good advice and I think I may have to use that as an alternaview :) No worries … I will give you the credit :) I think we sometimes take for granted the importance of doing things that just make us happy. It really matters how you feel every single moment of the day and we should be doing those things that make us feel great. Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom and the insight.

I like a lot of other people used to feel guilty about spending time on myself. I don’t have children yet – but I would imagine as a mom – it gets even harder to find a ‘me’ moment…

The little action of doing a small thing daily that the brain registers as ‘me time’, allows us to learn to rely on our own means to make ourselves happy – as opposed to waiting for our environment and the people in it to do that for us.

“good advice and I think I may have to use that as an alternaview” – oh please feel free to do that :) The more people can get the message the better.

Anita: Thanks for letting me use your idea as an alternaview. It really is a great one. I hope you will like how it turns out. I like to personally try to maintain an attitude of gratitude. Even in the midst of my frustration I try to remember that there is someone who has a lot more challenges than myself. I didn’t wake up outside. I woke up in my bed. I didn’t go to bed hungry. I ate some terrible fast food that gave me nightmares. I didn’t lose a child or a loved one. Thinking about my day in this mindframe keeps me humble and helps me appreciate the little things. Thanks for an excellent reminder. Great job Sibyl.

Once we look at things from the right perspective, I think it is always easy to find our way to gratitude … even if it has to do with terrible fast food :) Thanks so much for the comment. I can’t spend my whole life living on autopilot. I want challenge, I want something different, I want something that I can really enjoy. That’s the main reason why I chose this career. It’s my way of freeing myself with those typical works that everybody is doing. However, I tend to forget those people around me. It’s something that I’m missing nowadays.

Sibyl September 13, 2010 at 6:38 pm

Cole: Thanks for the comment. I agree that living your life on “auto pilot” is not the ideal state. I think if you can do what you have done and find something to do that you really enjoy, it can make it even easier to see all the great things around you. I do think it is helpful to be able to expose yourself to other people and their positive energy as well and you can usually do this in all sorts of ways. One of the most important things though is doing what you love and it sounds like you have found a way to do that :) Thanks again for the comment. I really appreciate it.

Yup! I found it and I’m happy with the results. Though I’m not earning that much as I expected at least as I move forward my career, I find that enjoyment and satisfaction than getting bored or burnt out. Overall, I’m so thankful on what I have right now! Hopefully, this will continue!

Cole: Thanks so much for the comment and sharing your perspective. I am so glad that you found what truly makes you happy and that you are also finding enjoyment and satisfaction with your discovery. I think if you continue to look at things this way, you can count on your satisfaction continuing :) Thanks again for the comment and the real world example.

Hello Sibyl,
how are you?
reading this post reminds me of an event which occurred about 6 years ago. I was so engulfed with work , meeting deadlines and the usual blah blah!!! i forgot my own birthday till noon when my friend(now wife lol!!) called.
we get so engrossed in many things we fail to recognise our tone/pitch of voice might be dismissive, patronizing….. when speaking to other colleagues.
i guess in the midst of the busy schedules, we’ve got to make a conscious effort to notice the pleasant smiles & input from colleagues, create time for family & friends……
take care of yourself and enjoy the rest of the day.

Hey Ayo. Always great to hear from you. I think that is a great real world example. It is so true that we can get so caught up in what is going on, that we are not paying enough attention to how we are communicating and also taking notice of the great things around us. I think the key really is to continually remind yourself and do things that focus your attention on enjoying and appreciating what is around you. Eventually, it becomes a good habit and just happens naturally. thanks for the comment. I really appreciate it.

Hi Sibyl
I break my day up by wandering about and chatting to people.
Even in big organisations most of us make “friends” and those are the people I like to chat to.
You can always find something to talk about.

I’ve tried working at home but have always missed working within a team.
I’m not the most sociable of people – so my wife tells me LOL but I do enjoy that interaction with real people.

Sibyl, I am a huge proponant of mindfulness. When I talk to people about it, they wrongly assume that it simply means being immersed and aware of what you are doing at any given time. But it also means being accutely aware of the way you feel as well.

You’ve done a great job of bringing that to light with this post. Thanks and cheers!

Josh: Thanks so much for the comment. Hi Sybil – Noticing is so important. For me there’s a strong sensation component to it: noticing colors, shapes, smells, textures, sounds. Well, you get the picture. If I can somehow be in that place, balancing thinking with sensation, then I am bound to have a happy day even if I’m working hard. Of course, it’s not that easy, I’ve found. But thanks for the great reminder.

This is awesome advice Sibyl. Thanks for such a timely post. You caught me right smack in the middle of overlooking all the great things around me!

I’ve been blasting through this Monday – just as you say – tackling all those projects head on. And it’s been a great day, productivity wise… especially for a Monday.

So, I know you say “every time I can remember” be aware of the things around me. Here’s my question for you. Do you have any great tricks or techniques for doing this? I know for a fact that with repetition anything can become a habit. But until it does become a habit, how do I remember to do it? On the weekends this is a no brainer. I always take time to appreciate the little things… like my French press coffee, or my cat joining me while a read a good book, or hearing the rain on the roof. All wonderful things!

How can I learn to do this in the midst of high speed activity? Do you have any thoughts on this?

Oh, and I’ll start right now with a little break and a breathe of fresh air! Thank you.

Sibyl September 13, 2010 at 5:57 pm

Theresa: Thanks for the great comment. You are so right that it is often easier to remember to do this on the weekends :) and also when things are going smoothly. The challenge is to remember when your mind gets too caught up in everything else you are doing. For me, what has worked really well is to make certain that I am surrounded about things that trigger me to think about how great things really are. I have some pictures that kind of snap me into this mind frame, and believe it or not, I found a great relaxing cell phone ring that reminds me to focus on what I appreciate. I think the key is to get things that are symbolic and mean something to you and then make certain that you surround yourself with them so that you have to notice them and they remind you to notice and appreciate what the moment has to offer. As you mentioned, you really do get better and better at it and it ends up becoming a great habit. Thanks again for the great comment and I would love to have updates as to how this is working for you.

We are always so consumed with getting ‘there’, or arriving at some final goal.. but we should always enjoy every moment. Like the Zen masters said: enjoy the process, not the destination :)
