Should You Quit Your Job & Do What You Really Want? 4 Questions to Ask Yourself

“When the deepest part of you becomes engaged in what you are doing, when your activities and actions become gratifying and purposeful, when what you do serves both yourself and others, when you do not tire within but seek the sweet satisfaction of your life and your work, you are doing what you were meant to be doing.”  Gary Zukav

Do you ever have those days where you dream about quitting your job and going to do something you are really passionate about? Is there a part of you that is attracted to the idea of moving on and doing something new?

If your answers to both questions are “yes”, then you may want to keep reading.

Maybe you already have an idea of what it is you really want to do, but just haven’t figured out how you can realistically make it happen without risking too much.

I think one of the most common questions people ask, is “how do you know if you are really meant to quit your job and do something else?”

I know this is a question I used to ask myself all the time, but it took a while before I really even seriously considered quitting my job.

I would continually tell myself that the timing wasn’t right and that more things needed to fall into place before I decided to quit my job and “jump” into the unknown. I had to be realistic … I had bills, responsibilities, and a family to take care of.

I was looking for signs or anything that would point me in the right direction and as time went on, I just became more unsettled and confused.

I would read about other people quitting their jobs in order to do what they love and they always sounded so confident that it was the right decision. And, that just convinced me even more that I should stay working until I had as much confidence as they did and was totally free of fears and doubts.

Of course I now realize that day would never have come. When it came to quitting my job, I was never going to reach the point where I was 100% free of doubts and fears.

It’s almost to be expected that when you are taking a chance or making a big change, you are going to have some doubts and fears. They come with the territory and if you are waiting for them to just go away, you will probably be waiting for a long time.

Fears and doubts don’t just disappear. You work through them one by one and eventually your confidence overshadows them and they slowly melt away.

But, the good thing is that you can “jump” despite the fears and doubts that you may have.  They only hold you back and stop you from jumping if you let them.

The key though is to ask yourself if there is something out there that you feel extremely passionate about that makes you come alive.

I have realized that really is how “work” is supposed to feel. I never really got it when people would say that when you do what you love, it will not feel like “work”.

But, that really is how it should be.

And, if there is something that does that for you, you have got to figure out a way to go and do it.

How do you know if it really is your passion and what you are meant to do?

4 important questions to ask yourself (from Zukav’s quote):

  1. When you are doing it, does the deepest part of you become really engaged in what you are doing?
  2. Is it something that feels gratifying and purposeful?
  3. In one way or another, does it serve you and others?
  4. Do you so enjoy it that you lose yourself in it from time to time and never really get tired of doing it?

The time finally came for me when the answers to all four of those questions were “yes”, and if that is the same for you, then it probably is time to start seriously making plans to pursue whatever it is you are passionate about.

It doesn’t mean you have to quit your job tomorrow and that you can’t be smart about it and make plans.

But, what I can tell you is that if your answers are all “yes”, then this is probably something you are meant to do and the feeling is not going to go away. The best thing you can do TODAY is start preparing yourself and your mind to “jump”.
