11 of Life’s Most Important Lessons

I used to not really understand that we can figure out how this whole “life thing” works and once we do everything falls into place so much easier. I was primarily focused on absorbing as much information as I could and getting better at the things that I thought were going to “get me ahead in life”.

But, I didn’t realize that I was also supposed to be focusing on seeing the bigger picture and learning from all the lessons that came my way.

It hadn’t occurred to me that I was supposed to get better and better at living — that I was supposed to Live Today Better than Yesterday.

One day though it clicked and I have been paying close attention ever since.

Because, when it comes to life and how we are living, we are supposed to take notice of what works, what doesn’t work, and most importantly use all the wisdom we have gained from our past experiences.

So, I have been taking notes to make sure that I don’t overlook or miss anything again. Although lessons continue to come as we move through life, these are 11 lessons that are at the top of my notes because they are really important. If we can keep these lessons top of mind today (and every today that follows) and really apply them to how we are living, we are guaranteed to always be moving in the right direction.

11 of Life’s Most Important Lessons:

1. If you can “accept finite disappointment and maintain infinite hope” (Martin Luther King Jr.), you will be able to accomplish just about anything you want.

2. “The more you give, the more you receive”. We’ve all heard this one before when it comes to being generous with money, but this lesson applies to way more than charitable giving.  You literally get back everything you put out there.  If you want more of anything in your life, then be aware of what you are personally putting out there — kindness, generosity, love, anger, frustration, money, etc.  It all comes right back to you.

3. Realize that life always puts in front of you exactly what you need at that precise moment in time. Use whatever comes your way and learn from it. “Whether it is good or bad or tastes sweet or sour, life gives you exactly what you need. ” Aisha Taylor

4. Love not only makes the world turn, it also makes the ride worthwhile. Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way to show love to anyone and everyone that comes into your life.

5. It doesn’t take much to make the day better, but it does take intent. Even if there are challenges, obstacles and other craziness going on in our life, we always get to choose how we are going to tackle the day and the type of energy that runs through our system. “About 90% of the things in our life are right. Make sure you don’t overlook the 90% that is right because you are focusing on the 10% that isn’t.”   Dale Carnegie

6. We should always believe something wonderful is coming our way. Truly being happy and fulfilled, accomplishing your goals and watching your dreams become a reality — that is what is promised to you and is the way your life will unfold. But, you’ve got to do your part. You’ve got to believe it and go for it.

7. If you struggle with a situation, but never learn the underlying lesson, it will come back to you again and again until you learn it … even though it may come in a different size box with a different color ribbon.

8. “The first to apologize is the bravest. The first to forgive is the strongest. The first to move on is the happiest.” Unknown

9. “You can’t control the waves, but you can learn to surf”-John Kabat Zinn Challenges are going to come — but we’re not supposed to get sucked in. We shouldn’t let them be too “heavy” and weigh us down because we have been given the amazing ability to surf. We just have to choose to do it.

10. Sometimes the best thing you can do is let go — so better things can come your way.

11. Silence really is golden and there’s nothing better than stillness. Make sure you are enjoying as much of both as possible.

    Hi Sibyl,

Amazing lessons that we can all learn from. “We should always believe something wonderful is coming our way.” is one that jumped out at me. We have a choice to go through life with a positive frame of mind, or a negative frame of mind. When we think positive, life is more fun and rewarding. Life has it’s ups and downs, but when we know that just around the corner, the goodness will be back, we feel much happier. Thanks for sharing.

    Sibyl,
This is one of my favorite posts yet! Love all the quotes but #2, #4 #8, #9 are my favs….Giving/Receiving, love, forgiveness, and going with the flow… that can pretty much take care of everything!!
    Thanks!

    Love this Sibyl.
On reason I believe that all that we give comes back is because we’re all one. Also love, compassion, kindness etc. are beyond time and space. Unlimited and limitless. xo

Thanks for those important life lessons :)

I practice and big believer of No.2 “the more you give, the more you receive”. I always tell people surrounding me. Well like you said, money people think that give must be money / materials. But I believe it is more than just money… It can be anything (love those your mentioned) as long as you give back to the universe :)

    Cheers,
    Dennis.

#7 has been the theme of my life. It took me a while to realize that the Universe kept trying to deliver the same messages in different colored packages. Each time the message was delivered, it came with a heavier hand until I finally got it. Slowing down and seeing how I was contributing to the problems finally allowed me to learn the lessons and move on. Now I’ve learned how to shorten the learning process and avoid much of the pain (thankfully). This lesson also fits well with #3.

Thanks, Sibyl, for a beautiful reminder of the really important stuff!

Thanks for the comment Paige. It took me a little while to get lesson #7 too:) Better late than never right? :) Thanks so much for the comment and thanks for dropping by.

    Great post Sibyl!

It has been some time since I sent a poem your way:

    6. We should always believe something wonderful is coming our way.

    ‘This Place in the Ways’

    Having come to this place
    I set out once again
On the dark and marvelous way
    From where I began:
Belief in the love of the world,
    Woman, spirit, and man.

    Having failed in all things
    I enter a new age
Seeing the old ways as toys,
    The houses of a stage
    Painted and long forgot;
And I find love and rage.

Rage for the world as it is
But for what it may be
More love now than last year.
    And always less self-pity
Since I know in a clear light
    The strength of the mystery.

And at this place in the ways
    I wait for song,
My poem-hand still on the paper,
    All night long.
Poems in throat and hand, asleep,
    And my storm heating strong!

    ~Muriel Rukeyser 1948,1951

    Sybil…
Your list is great. BUT it is the body of your post that is filled with jewels. This phrase is one that I am posting and reading everyday: “Because, when it comes to life and how we are living, we are supposed to take notice of what works, what doesn’t work, and most importantly use all the wisdom we have gained from our past experiences.”

It is similar to practicing the piano. You can practice for hours day after day and improve. But the pianists who make significantly more headway are those who learn HOW to practice. They pick up on the most efficient way to improve.

It is not enough to try and practice if we want change and live a conscious life. We need to see what works and what doesn’t. Great stuff! Fran

    • 24

:) Thanks Fran. I appreciate it and am so glad that you liked the post. I loved your analogy to the piano. That is so true. It’s all about doing everything you can to grow day after day. Thanks so much for dropping by and thanks for the comment.

Thank you Sibyl! This is an amazing piece, just like many others you have shared! There are some many of those that I can really connect with, and especially #7 and #8! The more I learn how to ‘listen’ intuitively, the more I can feel the light coming and connecting all the pieces together. Thank you for your shining forth your brilliance and creativity.

:) Thank you Shirly for the kind words. I really loved what you said about learning to listen intuitively. I think that is so important and something that we can absolutely get better and better at. Thanks for the comment and thanks for dropping by.
