3 Simple Things You Can Do To Have An Amazing Thanksgiving Day

“Every moment you get is a gift. Why waste it by dwelling on things that make you unhappy. Spend it doing the things you love and be with the people you enjoy.”

Have you always had the best Thanksgiving days? I was thinking about some of my past Thanksgivings and I realized I didn’t do Thanksgiving “the right way”. It’s not that I didn’t enjoy the day and feel grateful for all my family and friends. But, there were so many years I was kind of going through the motions or distracted by all the thoughts running through my mind. I definitely didn’t experience and enjoy the true depth of each moment.

Have you ever noticed all the thoughts, specifically on Thanksgiving day, that can run through your mind and take your attention away from just enjoying and experiencing the moment in front of you?

“Why does she always say rude things?”

“I am really hungry.”

“Why do I always end up doing all the work?”

“I wonder if I can sneak away and watch football.”

“I hope he doesn’t say anything crazy.”

or any of the other countless thoughts that may run through our mind.

Experiencing The Day The Right Way

Despite the fact that our mind may try to distract us, Thanksgiving has all the makings of an amazing day. I mean it really has every single thing we need – don’t you agree? You’re with people you love. You get to enjoy time away from work or your regular routine. You get to indulge in some of the best food and dessert of the entire year.

But, what I realized is that in order to get all the benefits and truly experience everything the day offers, we’ve got to “dive into” the depth of each moment. That means as we move through the day, we feel at our best, our love is flowing, and our complete attention is on the moment right in front of us. It’s like one of my favorite quotes explains …

“If we are not fully ourselves, truly in the present moment, we miss everything.” ~Thich Nhat Hanh

And, what I also realized is there are certain things we can do that will allow us to truly experience the day the right way and take full advantage of it.

The Possibility of Thanksgiving Day: Enjoying the Depth of Each Moment

1. Start The Day off Right With A Burst of Gratitude. Take 10 minutes in the morning and reflect on all the people you love and appreciate. Think about how grateful you are to have everything you already have in your life. Then take 3 deep breaths and really let that feeling settle in. It’s great to have thoughts of gratitude, but you also want to actually feel Love and gratitude and then rest in that feeling.

2. Have Three Deep Gratitude Moments Throughout The Day. As you move through the day, take 2-3 minutes and reflect on your gratitude for the people around you. Even if you’re around someone that pushes your buttons, think about ways you can appreciate that person too. Again, you then take 3 deep breaths and you feel your Love and gratitude. This is really important to do throughout the day because it keeps you in the right frame of mind and keeps the best energy flowing. You only need to do it 3 times during the day. That’s doable isn’t it?

3. Enjoy, Laugh and Have Fun. Let go a little, laugh and enjoy the people around you. It’s like that great quote by Jarod Kintz reminds us …“Laughter is the sound of the soul dancing.”  Anytime you feel like you’re getting caught in the whirlwind of the day or annoyed, focus on enjoying the people around you or have a Deep Gratitude Moment (Step#2 above).

Here Are Some Other Great Reminders For Thanksgiving Day

“Every moment you get is a gift. Why waste it by dwelling on things that make you unhappy. Spend it doing the things you love and be with the people you enjoy.”

“The secret to having it all … is realizing you already do.”

“Today I will not alloy my inner peace to be disturbed by things or people outside of my control.”

“There’s Always Always Always something to be thankful for.”

“Because when you stop and look around… This life is pretty amazing.”

I did all of these things, in one form or another, on Thanksgiving. A day of deep and frequent gratitude. Just before TG, I posted my last blog post (hope you’ll stop by). It’s time for me to turn to other things. But before I do, I wanted to stop by and say thank you to bloggers who have been a big part of my blog life these past few years. You were a big influence on me in many ways, and I enjoyed stopping by to see what your latest “list” might be. I also appreciated our common legal background. So thank you. Wishing you all the best, Galen
