3 Simple Things You Can Do To Have A Great Thanksgiving

Have you always had great Thanksgiving days? I was thinking about some of my past Thanksgivings and I realized I didn’t always do Thanksgiving “the right way”. It’s not that I didn’t enjoy the day and feel grateful for all my family and friends.

But, there were so many years I wasn’t taking full advantage of enjoying and experiencing the day because I was distracted by many of the thoughts running through my mind.

Sometimes I would be thinking about why people did or said certain things …

“Why did she say that to me? Did I do something wrong?”

“Why does he always do that? It is so rude.”

Other times I would be thinking or worrying about things that had nothing to do with Thanksgiving day.

“What if things keep getting worse at work?”

“I don’t know if things are ever going to work out.”

Have you ever noticed all the thoughts that can recycle through your mind over and over again and take your attention away from enjoying and experiencing the moment in front of you? A lot of times you may not even realize how much your mind is wandering and how all your worrying, thinking, and mental complaining is affecting how you feel. That was the trap I was falling into and not even really realizing it.

But, I finally figured out there is a better way to move through the day … a much much better way.

Experiencing The Day The Right Way

Despite the fact that our mind may continually try to distract us, Thanksgiving has all the makings of an amazing day. You’re with people you love. You get to enjoy time away from work or your regular routine. You get to indulge in some of the best food and have a day filled with good conversations, laughter and so many other good moments.

But, like any other day … that is just a possibility.

In order to get all the benefits and truly experience everything the day offers, we’ve got to take full advantage of our moments. That means as we move through the day, we are happy, our good energy is flowing, and our complete attention is on the moment right in front of us. Anytime we catch our mind wandering or we realize we are focusing on the wrong thoughts, we gently remind ourselves to enjoy the people around us or whatever we are doing. It’s like that great quote by Thich Nhat Hanh explains:

“If we are not fully ourselves, truly in the present moment, we miss everything.” 

There are simple little things we can do that will allow us to truly experience the day the right way. And, of course the payoff is enormous. It’s how you can have a great Thanksgiving, feel at your best, and truly enjoy the day.

The Possibility of Thanksgiving Day

1. Take Your Morning “Time In”. Take some time to yourself at the very beginning of the day (10 minutes). Read the quotes below and have a burst of gratitude. Think about all the people you love and appreciate. Think about how grateful you are to have everything you already have in your life. Then take 3 deep breaths and really let that feeling settle in. It’s great to have thoughts of gratitude, but you also want to actually feel Love and gratitude and then rest in that feeling.

2. Have Two More Deep Gratitude Moments Throughout The Day. As you move through the day, take 2-3 minutes and reflect on your gratitude for the people around you. Even if you’re around someone that pushes your buttons, think about ways you can appreciate that person too. Don’t let anyone take away your inner peace. Take another 3 deep breaths and feel your Love and gratitude. This is really important to do during the day because it keeps you in the right frame of mind and keeps the best energy flowing. You only need to do it 2 times during the day. That’s doable isn’t it?

3. Enjoy, Laugh and Have Fun. Let go a little, laugh and really enjoy the people around you. It’s like that great quote by Jarod Kintz reminds us …“Laughter is the sound of the soul dancing.”  Anytime you get distracted by the wrong thoughts, focus instead on enjoying the people around you or have a Deep Gratitude Moment (#2 above).
